Volunteers Lend A Helping Hand at YMCA Camp Wapsie
This past Sunday, Camp Wapsie hosted its annual Volunteer Day. Over 20 volunteers from all around the area came out to camp to help with various projects to get ready for the arrival of summer campers! Camp also receives a ton of help throughout the year from companies around the Cedar Rapids area. Pictured above is a team from United Fire Group, who brought a group of employees out to camp to help build a fence, fix fishing poles and improve landscaping. Thank you to all of our volunteers that lend their help with camp projects each year!

Register for Summer Swim Team
Registration for the summer swim team with the MACR Sharks is open with practices officially kicking off Monday, June 3! Whether you are new to swim team or a seasoned veteran, summer swim team is a great opportunity to practice and refine your stroke work, build some fitness and take part in local summer swim meets. For many kids, summer swim team is the beginning of a competitive swimming career.
“We’re excited to get started with another summer swim season” states Sharks Head Coach, Donald Pirrie. “It’ll be great to see our YMCA swimmers back in the pool after a short time off. As much as we focus on working hard and improving technique, summer swim team is also about the social aspect – about having fun and making new friends”.
New for 2019, Sharks swimmers will have the opportunity to broaden their swimming horizons with a few optional long course swim meets in addition to the regular city meet schedule. “We’re always looking for new ways to improve the experience that our swimmers have, whether it’s new competition options or through equipment and technology enhancements.” notes Pirrie. “My favorite new addition at the moment is our swimmer headsets that let’s us talk directly to the swimmers as they swim. It allows us to give real-time feedback to any swimmer in the pool and make stroke corrections as we see them… If you ask the swimmers though, they’ll say they love listening to the music!!"

FREE Field Hockey Clinic
Saturday, June 15th, 2019
10:00am - 12:00pm
@ Stoney Point YMCA
What is Field Hockey?
Field hockey is a team sport played on a soccer sized field, with 10 players and a goalie on each side. Players carry sticks, wear shin guards and mouth guards, and pass a hard round ball around the field in an attempt to score goals. Fun Fact: Field Hockey is the second most played sport in the world (behind soccer)! In the US, field hockey is spreading quickly, and is now in 25 states. Our very own University of Iowa has a women's field hockey team! This past season was very successful; they made it to the Big Ten Finals as well as the NCAA tournament.
About the Coach
Alyssa Seyfer began playing field hockey in her local YMCA at 8 years old. After earning All American honors for three years at Amherst College, she went on to coach youth hockey through the YMCA in her hometown of Darien, CT. For the past five years, she has coached a varsity team in a suburb of Chicago and helped lead her team to the Illinois State finals. Alyssa has been an Elementary teacher for the past 8 years and loves working with children. She is extremely excited to bring field hockey to Cedar Rapids and work with our budding female athletes!
