Season of Community
You can make a difference for a child this season by participating in our Holiday Giving Tree program.

Please consider selecting an ornament and helping a family in need this holiday season. Over 140 children are included on our tree. The kids and families we support are grateful for any help you can provide.

One parent shared, "I appreciate this very much. I struggle enough as it is and always freak out at this time of year. This lifts that burden of worry and this is a Christmas miracle to me. The kids will be happy with whatever people are generous enough to help with. Thanks again."

Giving trees are located in our Nir Family YMCA and Midtown YMCA lobbies. All gifts need to be wrapped and returned by December 11th.

Thank you in advance for your generous support. The "thank you" ornament is for you to keep!

YMCA Receives Award
Our YMCA received recognition from AARP on November 16, 2019, for our collaboration with AARP and the City of Southport to provide a tactical urbanism project in Southport, NC last September.

This project took place on Friday, September 13 from 9:00am-12:00pm at Moore St. & Davis St. The YMCA recruited 10 volunteers to do a parklet and help paint two permanent crosswalks on Davis St., and one temporary crosswalk across Moore St. The City of Southport has been collecting feedback from the community to determine next steps. Our goal is to work with DOT to install a permanent crosswalk and additional pedestrian and bicyclist signs.

Why Play Soccer This Winter?
Even though it's cold outside we have soccer programs available for your kids this winter! Here are some reasons why you should sign them up:

It helps kids stay fit and healthy: S occer improves cardiovascular health, increases coordination, improves strength and enhances flexibility.

Involves teamwork: S occer players have to work together as a team in order be successful. Teamwork is a skill needed to be successful in school, work and family!

Improves gross motor skills: It helps strengthen core muscles which allows kids be more physically active thus more healthy!

Boosts self-confidence and self-esteem:  It helps your kids gain confidence in themselves. They become more comfortable learning new things and performing in front of a crowd. Of course scoring a goal helps too!

Increases social interactions:  Players have to learn how to work together and communicate effectively in order to be successful.

Increases concentration and focus:  Players need to always be aware and alert throughout the game or they will miss important plays and opportunities.

Promotes cognitive development:  Playing soccer helps kids enhance their visual-spatial awareness as well as problem solving skills. The fast pace of soccer makes kids think quickly and respond. This improves cognitive flexibility.

It’s fun!  It is so important for kids to LOVE the sport they play. Soccer is fun and exciting which is why it is one the most popular sports in the world!

What's your job here at the Y?
Youth Services Program Director

How long have you been with the Y? (This one or otherwise)  5 Years at this Y

What's your favorite thing about coming to our Y?
Seeing all the members I have gotten to know over the years always brightens my day. I love being around and interacting with the other staff here and the children in my programs. For me the Y has always felt like a second home.

What's your Y story? What initially brought you to the Y?
My major at ECU was Health Fitness Specialist. I was required to do an internship the last 3 months of college. I knew I wanted to do it somewhere near the beach - I have always wanted to live close to the beach. I accepted an internship with the YMCA in the wellness department 5 years ago. I started 3 days before we opened the Express YMCA. I was hired on as wellness staff after my internship and knew I wanted to stay with the Y and grow into a full time position. I currently run and oversee the afterschool and summer camp programs at the Midtown YMCA, as well as our Y Guides program.

What would you like Y members and staff to know about you?
That I absolutely love what I get to do every day. Even though our jobs are tough and not always easy, being able to impact the kids in my program in a positive way each day is so rewarding. Some of the kids in our programs have been through a lot, so being able to give them a safe and fun atmosphere after school or during summer camp each day can truly have a huge positive impact on them. The same can be said for my Y guides program. It is a program that helps bond fathers and their children and the experience the program provides is unmatched. Seeing the kids and their dads at Y Guide events brings me so much joy because I know the impact this program has on the participants involved.
