YMCA GENERAL ASSEMBLY CONFERENCE
Every three years, YMCA staff and volunteers from North America converge in one location to discuss national initiatives and strategic plans, network with peers, and learn more about what YMCAs in various communities are doing to have a positive impact.
This year’s conference was held in Atlanta, GA, with over 4,000 attendees. YMCA of the Capital Area Board Members Adonica Duggan and Amy Province and YMCA of the Capital Area President/CEO Christian Engle, attended the YMCA General Assembly Conference.

YMCA CHANGEMAKERS AND THEIR FUTURES
Our YMCA Changemakers winners, Nicole Lin and Alex Wei, have graduated high school and are off to college! Check out what their plans are for their future.
Nicole Lin will be attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a major of Mechanical Engineering and/or Computer Science. She states that it has always been a dream to be at the front of creating cutting-edge technology and hopes to design sustainable energy systems, materials and other innovations.
When asked about her experience at the YMCA DC conference she said, "The passion of the youth governors inspired me and sparked life-long friendships while the conversations with the congressmen reminded me there are a multitude of ways to contribute to my community, one of which is to advocate for my beliefs."
| |
Alex Wei will be attending Yale University with a major in Mechanical Engineering. He says that his goal is to either pursue an aerospace start-up designing sustainable aircrafts or work on public policy that encourages sustainable engineering.
When asked about his experience at the YMCA DC conference he said, "Not only did I meet many amazing people and create lifelong friendships, I also had an unforgettable opportunity to interact with national policy makers. As someone who had little experience in politics prior to the trip, the YMCA conference opened my eyes to the world on Capitol Hill. Talking with youth governors and national congressmen about everything from potential policy plans to day-to-day life helped me realize that I myself had an emerging interest in politics."

This Welcoming Week (September 8-17), the YMCA of the Capital Area will join Welcoming America, other YMCAs and organizations nationwide to celebrate immigrants’ contributions to communities and bring together all residents in a spirit of unity. Each year, Welcoming Week elevates the growing movement of communities that fully embrace new Americans and their contributions to the social fabric of the country. The event is an opportunity for neighbors—both immigrants and U.S.-born residents—to get to know one another and celebrate what unites people as a community.
Join us throughout the week for different activities at the Y to help celebrate and welcome everyone!
