SENATOR KING VISITS TRAFTON

On August 15th, Senator Angus King visited the YMCA Trafton Senior Center. Senator King opened discussion with a question for our seniors.

"How many of you want to go to a nursing home?" he asked.

The resounding answer was of course "no way"! So, that began a discussion about aging in place and identifying some of the obstacles seniors face in being able to maintain an independent and healthy life style.

Senator King's time at the center was limited and we only scratched the surface of this very complex issue. Our Y Trafton Center Director Thea Murphy is also part of an initiative here in Sanford called Thriving in Place, which meets monthly to work on this very concern.

"The ability to live life on our own terms is very important to us and can be very different from senior to senior," said Murphy. Many Trafton members live alone and are still in the homes where they raised their families and built their lives.  Some have down-sized and are in an apartment or senior housing, or even living with relatives.

We have an opportunity to continue this discussion with Senator King and his Regional Representative Bonita Pothier.  Please contact Thea Murphy, Y Trafton Senior Center Director if you would like to add your input. What makes aging in place more difficult? What would make it easier? Some examples might include "it would be easier for me to stay in my home if I had help with cleaning, or light maintenance, or help with shopping," etc.

Once we have a good assortment of concerns we can invite Bonita to the center and share them with her. She in turn will share our thoughts with Senator King.  We could also share these outcomes with the Thriving in Place team that is working to help us improve our quality of life.

Do you have thoughts about aging in place that you would like to add to the ongoing discussion? We want to hear your voice! Contact Thea Murphy at tmurphy@sanfordymca.org or write the Y Trafton Center, P. O. Box 249, Sanford, Maine 04073.

CELEBRATING COMMUNITY: EXPANSION GRAND OPENING
After over a decade of planning, fundraising, and construction, the Y celebrated the grand opening of its expansion space on September 17th.

The Y's grand opening celebration included speeches by YMCA Board Member John Roux, YMCA CEO Andy Orazio, Deputy Mayor Maura Herlihy, and a written statement of acknowledgment by Senator Angus King.

Major capital campaign donors stood behind YMCA members Adeline and Lyla Fiandaca as they cut the ribbon opening up the new space, assisted by David Genest and Marguerite Herlihy.

An estimated 300 to 400 community members attended the event.

The new 22,000 square foot expansion space includes enhancements such as a 5,500 square foot fitness center featuring brand new cardio and strength equipment, larger group fitness studios, Prime Time space, and program spaces as well as a new game room.

"The Y is more than a gym. It's a cause," said Merilee Perkins, the Y's Senior Program Director. "We are dedicated to nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving the health and well-being of our community, and giving back and providing support to our neighbors."

"Our new, larger facility space equips us with a greater ability to live our organization's cause of strengthening community," she added.

YMCA ANNOUNCES NEW EARLY LEARNING CENTER

The Y Owls Preschool program is about to take flight as it transitions into the Sanford-Springvale YMCA Early Learning Center this October.

The new Early Learning Center will offer a 2,440 square foot newly renovated program environment, more than doubling the current Y Owls Preschool space. The customized, larger classroom space will provide enhancements such as designated music, technology, literacy, art and dramatic play centers.

Children will learn, grow, and thrive by engaging in activities such as swimming, creative art projects, music and movement activities, story time, and outdoor play, as well as regular field trips and weekly excursions to the local library for "read and romp" time. The program is designed to support the scheduling needs of all families by providing year round, quality care from 6 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday.

"A key component to a quality early childhood education program is the learning environment," said Matt Ouellette, Youth and Family Services Director.

"We are very excited to share our newly renovated, larger classroom environment with young learners to provide them with the foundation they need for a successful educational journey," he added.

Other highlights of the new Early Learning Center will include private playground access, access to additional newly renovated play space, and exclusive access for parents through an independent entrance for increased security.

The Y is currently accepting registrations with limited enrollment opportunities. LEARN MORE

STRONG SEASON FOR THE TITANS

Fall is in the air, and the YMCA Titans are excited to be back in the pool for their 2017-2018 season.

Currently 87 swimmers are registered for the Titans team, with a strong core of returning swimmers.

"We have only been practicing for a few weeks and already the team is showing incredible determination and motivation," said Titans Head Coach Tate Warden.

This year, the Titans welcome new coach Karina Urquhart to the team, and volunteer coach Sam Lariviere. Both are Titans alumni.

In addition to the new coaches, swimmers can look forward to an increase in practice offerings this season.

"It's looking as if this could be one of the most successful seasons in recent Titans history," added Warden.

The Titans competitive swim team for swimmers age 6 to 18 promotes progression at an individual level while embracing the Y's core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Want to learn more about a YMCA swim team experience?  LEARN MORE

NEW YOUTH GAME ROOM DROP-IN PROGRAM

At the Y, we recognize how forming healthy habits and behaviors in middle school and high school years are crucial for healthy development from kid to young adult.  During these years where youth transition into independence, the Y provides a safe environment where kids can have fun and find who they are.

Beginning October 3rd, the Y is excited to offer a FREE youth game room drop-in program Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 - 4:30 pm for ages 12 - 17.

Under the new drop-in program, kids ages 12 to 17 will be able to use the Y's new game room free of charge during this period. Drop-in program includes use of the game room only. Youth must provide a guest waiver signed by parent or guardian prior to participation. PRINT WAIVER HERE
