On August 25, 2022, the Parkinson's Foundation presented a check to the YMCA of the Capital Area for $20,000 to help support the Y's Movement Matters Program.
Movement Matters is a wellness program for people with Parkinson's! The program began on August 2, and offers a movement program based on indoor cycling. This grant will allow us to offer more programming, additional resources and to have our instructors trained and ready to serve our community in chronic disease programming.
We would love to thank the Parkinson's Foundation for their support, WAFB and BRProud for coming out to cover the event.
Click the link below to be added to a notification list, register for one of the classes/waitlists for a class, and complete a medical history form in preparation for class.

Our YMCA is participating in a national survey that aims to help the YMCA better understand the needs and desires of members and program participants in the post-pandemic environment. Please help us out by taking this 5 minute survey and providing us with your valuable feedback. Thank you for supporting our YMCA.

HEALTHY LIVING IN CHILDREN
|
|
September is Childhood Obesity month. Childhood obesity is a major public health problem. Children who are obese are at higher risk for other health conditions and disease such as type 2 diabetes, back and joint problems, sleep apnea and more. Childhood obesity could be caused by factors such as lack of physical activity, access to unhealthy foods, lack of nutrient rich foods and not getting the required amount of sleep. Some ways that we can help prevent children from obesity are cooking healthy meals at home, ensuring that they get the recommended hours of sleep, turning off their devices to encourage them to engage in more physical activities, and limiting the consumption of sugary drinks by replacing them with water.

September 18 is national RESPECT DAY and since "respect" is one of our core values we encourage everyone to take part in celebrating this day. Respect day was started to encourage people to focus more on ways in which they can be respectful to others. On this day try to be more attentive to loved ones, treat all people with a more polite approach, encourage and support others. We hope this day will inspire people to think more about how they treat others all year around.

Electronic Sports, or eSports, takes on the form of organized, multiplayer online video game competitions and is one of the fastest growing trends for youth engagement. Through the Y’s eSports program, youth are welcome to be who they are, excel at what they love, and develop the social, strategic and problem-solving skills necessary to grow into thriving adults all in a safe, moderated and inclusive environment. eSports at the Y promotes: Teamwork, Leadership, Online Safety, Individual Growth, and Equity Focus.
Thanks to support from Cox Communications, a limited number of scholarships will be available for students to access eSports. We also want to thank Kyle Gay with the YMCA of Greater Omaha for their team’s collaboration and logistical support.
Registration for this remote program will open on September 26, 2022, and the 8-week program will run from 11/7/22 through 12/30/22. Click here for more information.

This month's Member Spotlight is Willie "Mr. Chill" Roberts Sr!
Mr. Chill has been a member of the A. C. Lewis YMCA for 2.5 years and joined because his sons encouraged him to. Mr. Chill enjoys exercising, using the weight machines and, most of all, the steam room in the Men's Locker room. Mr. Chill says he can't say enough about how the Y has impacted his life. Mr. Chill enjoys coming to the Y in the morning and visiting with friends over a cup of coffee.
To someone who is interested in joining the Y, Mr. Chill would say it's a place that everyone needs to be a part of. The benefits that the Y has for your body are extraordinary, and the staff makes it that much more enjoyable.
