New Mentor Recruitment

This month, we invited a group of mentors to join us in two Mentor Recruitment Focus Groups. We have a strong need for mentors, especially male, and this group of dedicated individuals helped us think outside of the box. If you have recruitment ideas that have worked for other organizations you're involved in, please email Megan --I'd love to talk more!

In the meantime, our Development Coordinator would love to meet with you to film a short testimonial video for us to use in social media and other mentor recruitment strategies. Interested? Sign up below!

Mentor's Corner

It's goal-setting time!

WHAT is a goal?

A goal is "an event, circumstance, or condition a person strives to attain."

WHY are we setting a goal?

  • An activity for mentors and mentees to complete together
  • Model goal-setting (and how adults set goals too!)
  • Gives matches something to check-in on
  • Helps YMI report our impact to grantors

WHEN & WHERE will we set the goal?

  • Set time aside during one of your meetings to introduce the concept and brainstorm potential goals
  • When you come together at the next meeting, put pen to paper and formalize this year's goal. We'll have a worksheet for you to complete.
  • We hope to have all goals complete by the end of October/beginning of November. We'll do a final check-in of the goal in May 2025 through the end of the year survey.
  • Brand new matches (and matches to come) will complete their goal setting exercise 2nd semester

HOW will we set a goal?

  • Consider the Goal Setting Guidelines document your Campus Coordinator sent you.
  • While this exercise is mostly focused around the mentee, I encourage you to set a goal as well!
  • Take advantage of the resources we've pulled or ones you've used in your own goal-setting

RESOURCES

  • YMI created Goal Setting Guidelines for you to consider as you get started. This document introduces the seven areas of growth and mentees will choose one based on their specific goal.
  • Similarly, the Road Map to Goal Setting considers your mentee's motivation and reframing the language around goals to ensure it's a fun process.
  • The Importance of Goal Setting dives a bit deeper into our WHY for this activity

Questions to Consider

  • What is your favorite thing to do and why?
  • Is there something you'd like to learn to do?
  • What's your strongest quality?
  • Who is someone you really admire?
  • What do you like best about school?
  • Where do you see yourself in 20 years?

Examples of Goals

Elementary

  • Make a new friend
  • Raise my hand in class and share my thoughts

Middle grades

  • Start a new hobby
  • Create a journal

High school

  • Seek a leadership role in school
  • Volunteer my time in the community
