A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI (AND SHERI)
Rabbi Israel Salantar, the progenitor of the Mussar Movement (Jewish mindfulness) begun in mid 19th century Lithuania, famously said:
When I was a young man, I wanted to change the world.
Now, as an old man, I realize the only thing I can change is myself.
But I’ve come to recognize that if long ago I had started with myself, then I could have
made an impact on my family.
And, my family and I could have made an impact on our town.
And that, in turn, could have changed the country,
and we could all indeed have changed the world.
This is the essence of this time of the year. We work on ourselves, first, in order to, ultimately,
have the largest impact.
I want to thank the congregation for the outpouring of love to Sheri and our family over the loss of her father, Irwin Horowitz. Irwin was a member of the JCC and a stalwart regular at our
evening Zoom minyan. The support of the board and of and of so many congregants has given us
strength at a time that it is greatly needed. This is one of the reasons why Sheri and I love being
a part of the JCC community.

A MESSAGE FROM THE JCC PRESIDENT
Yom Tov:
I am writing this message to you on the eve of our most solemn and reflective day of the year.
Yom Kippur 5782, is a time to remember the loved ones that have passed and a time to come together as a community to support one another. Our traditions require us to worship together. We have enjoyed playing together and breaking bread together. There is strength in our community, and every time we gather as a community or have others join our community; that strength grows.
Our strength is like a single twig, by itself it is easily broken in half, but bundle them together, and bind them, they might bend but will not be broken. That is the JCC, as individuals, it is simple to break us, but as a community bound by our faith, we cannot be broken. I consider the JCC, not only a community, but a family.
We are a family that is inviting to all who enter our doors. We have been described as "Haimish", a Yiddish word that translates into friendly or homey. We have earned that reputation with the hard work done by all of us working together. Even through the pandemic, we have gained membership.
As a result, I would like to have a new member Shabbat service held in our sanctuary in the near future. A Friday night dinner, and the Rabbi’s Shabbat cholent lunch followed by an afternoon of games until Havdalah and end the night with a movie. That is what I want to see, but just don’t know when we can do it.
I do know that we have to keep moving the bar on our Covid policies, but still keep ourselves and loved ones safe. We have been taking small steps, and with the assistance of medical experts, we will keep loosening the restraints. We will do this like a family, with the family’s input. Like all families, we do not always agree with one another, but since I have been president, we have always worked out our differences, and did what the board felt was best for the community.
As president, there have been issues that I did not agree with, but once the board approved it, I did everything in my power to see that they were carried out. That includes the use of masks while inside the JCC. The board voted to keep the mask mandate in effect within the building throughout the High Holiday season. We had a few issues with people during Rosh Hashanah, but once approached, they replaced their masks on their faces and all went along smoothly.
I am hoping that the same cooperation will be shown for Kol Nidre, and Yom Kippur. I am looking forward to greeting those of you attending in person Wednesday night and Thursday. Your board will again review this and other Issues when we meet in October. We will also be sending a survey to you for your comments and concerns on how the blended services went.
In the meantime, we are taking another step down the road to normalcy; we will be building the Sukkah this Friday September 17, 2021. This will happen at 10:00 AM. If you are able to assist us, please let us know. If we have to postpone, our rain date will be Sunday, September 19, 2021 at the same time.
In closing Irene and I wish you and your loved ones a G’mar Chatima Tovah.
Mike

In this Zoom era, we have been able to have a daily minyan at 8:15 AM and at 7:30 PM and on Shabbat. We encourage you to join us on the day of your loved one’s yahrzeit. In the morning, the service is about ½ hour beginning at 8:15 and in the evening at 7:30 until about 7:45. Rabbi will be glad to say the traditional El Malei Rachamim prayer for you, which is recited during the funeral, going up to the grave of the departed, Yizkor remembrance day and other occasions on which the memory of the dead is recalled. You are also welcome to share with the minyan some special memories of your loved one.

ENDOWMENT FUND - NEW INFORMATION !!!!!!!
Herb and Selma z”l Shapiro established the first individual Endowment Fund in memory of his father, as part of the JCC’s Endowment Fund portfolio. Judith z”l & Donald Pripstein joined the Shapiros and established The Pripstein Family Endowment Fund.
As recently reported, Don Pripstein pledged another $50,000 to establish The Judith & Donald Pripstein Endowment Fund.
As a result of Don’s letter, Harold Farin has stepped forward and has established “The Farin Family Endowment Fund”. This Fund will join with the three others as part of the JCC Endowment Fund portfolio. Other members are encouraged to also provide for the future of our JCC by establishing similar funds.
A donation of at least $50,000 to the endowment fund will allow the donor to name one of the funds as the donor wishes. All such named funds will be joined together to be part of the Endowment Fund portfolio.
Endowment funds are necessary to ensure the continuation and well being of our congregation. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this portfolio, whether as a specific named individual fund, or as a general donation. The donation can be spread over one, two, or three years, and can be paid via check, donation of appreciated stock, wills, or from the RMD of your IRA or 401K account. Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.
