Terry Humble and Christopher Saxman, Guest Speakers at August Westerners International Meeting
Terry Humble and Christopher Saxman will be the guest speakers at the Westerners' meeting to be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. at the Silver City Cross Point Church Fellowship Hall.  It is located at 11600 Highway 180 East; mile-marker 116. Come join us for a delicious meal and their presentation "Relics of the Underground Metal Miners" based on their book they co-authored (with the same title). Terry and Christopher's program for the August meeting of the Westerners will capture the "illustrious history and beauty of Grant County's Central Mining District. With Terry Humble's extensive knowledge, experience, and writings and Christopher Saxman's artistic eye and talent for visual story-telling", this presentation is sure to be fascinating and informative; so don't miss this one!

Humble and Saxman's presentation "will cover a brief history of the Central Mining District and Silver City area. It will relate the underground mine history, with remarkable photos, to the remaining 16 mines sites. It will emphasize the importance of the railroad to mining development and display an array of equipment used in underground mining over the years. Finally, stories from men who worked underground will be shared describing what it was like to tunnel thousands of feet into the ground, blasting, shoveling, and hammering their way into the darkness at sites like the Bullfrog, Hobo, Princess and Empire Zinc. Terry and Chris hope that their presentation will lead people to discover the remarkable beauty and rich mining history of the Central Mining District, Grant County New Mexico."

Their book "Relics of the Underground Metal Miners, covers the history of the Central Mining District. It makes clear the contribution underground mining made to the economy and to the development of the United States. The men working underground provided the copper, zinc, silver, gold, lead, and iron that built America and they provided crucial resources during both world wars. Without these metals the Allies could not have won. Included is a telegram from General Eisenhower wherein he thanked the miners from one of the underground mines, the Pewabic, for their important contribution to the war effort. For the first time, the rich stories of each mine have been assembled, and every remaining mine photographed to preserve this quickly disappearing part of our past. By way of over 400 creative photographs of mine relics you will come to discover the splendor of the Central Mining district. In addition, our first-hand accounts will help you sense what life was like for the men who worked in these underground mines. Relics of the Underground Metal Miners not only provides insight and understanding of the integral role that mining played in Grant County's past, but also encourages the preservation of the remaining mine facilities as a testament to our history and to these gritty, hard-working men, the underground metal miners of the Central Mining District of Grant County New Mexico. This is truly a remarkable book, a melding of art and history. It documents our history, and shines a glowing light on the state of New Mexico. We may be way out west, and we may be small, but we do our part for America. This book helps to further establish New Mexico's rightful place in American History."

Westerners is an international group dedicated to sharing and preserving the history of the American West. Westerners was founded in 1944 and has over 60 corrals (or chapters) in the US, and 20 corrals abroad, with over 4,000 members around the globe. Corrals generally meet for camaraderie and interesting programs on all aspects of Western history. Anyone who loves the lore and history of the American West can join. Members range from local history buffs and readers and viewers of Western movies, to professional historians, educators, writers, and artists of all kinds."

Our local chapter meets on the third Tuesday of every other month throughout the year, except for December; when the meeting is held on the second Tuesday. Dinner is served at the meeting, and the cost is $12.00 per person for members and $15 for non-members. The public is invited to attend the meeting and we ask that everyone planning on attending make reservations with Mary Margaret Soule at 538-2888 on or before Wednesday, August 14, 2019 (as we need to insure that enough food is prepared).

Wow, what a week!  Perfect weather here in Southern Montana where I am spending the peak of the summer.  Looking at the weather and warnings for Grant County, it appears to be kind of exciting there this August.  I was doing some tech support for smartphones tonight and was reminded of a few important details that may not be obvious to the users (most of us, my daughter is the phone expert around here).

When you buy a standard model phone, you get a certain "piece" of hardwar e.  But, that is only a small part of what makes up a modern smartphone.  Each carrier (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, etc.) customizes their phones (even your phone if you bring an open phone to them) through firmware and software modifications.  Some of this is done with the "sim" card and some of this is done by loading their network connectivity software, and still more results from being connected to their network (however directly or indirectly).

How different can a phone be from all of this?  My father-in-law and I own two identical model phones, he uses one carrier and I use another.  On mine, I can plug into my laptop and it starts charging from the USB port immediately and all of its memory shows up as a disk drive on my laptop (great for making backups, transferring photos, etc.).  His phone will load a driver and then start charging his phone, but there is no access from the PC.  If he wants to backup or any of that other handy stuff he has to make a network connection and load special software (available through his carrier) to make a transfer.  His screens are wonderfully intuitive, easy to see and work well for fat-fingered folks like me.  The user interface on my phone took some learning and buttons are a bit small for my fingers, and so on.

To make matters more confusing, many basic features are accessed differently on our two phones including settings, account names, and passwords, whether or not Wifi is used and on and on.

Moral of this story, it is important which carrier you select, perhaps, even more important than which phone, phablet or tablet you choose.  Often more value is present from the customer service people for the carrier than the actual network and from the customization that carrier provides to make your phone useable.  Please consider letting Benediktson Computer, Inc. assist you before you buy.  We have considerable experience helping people find the programs that make the work easy and efficient, and then finding electronic devices that can and will make for a good performing tool.  We can be reached at (575) 956-9723 or email at help@benediktson.com

 Destination Development Workshops Near You!
New Mexico Dept. of Tourism

The New Mexico Tourism Department is undertaking a destination development planning process that will enable us to understand the strategic decisions we must make today to ensure the long-term health of our visitor economy. To facilitate the process, we have retained Coraggio Group, a consulting firm specializing in developing strategy for tourism agencies.

As part of their discovery process, they want to hear from stakeholders in the tourism industry about where opportunities lie for New Mexico's tourism economy, what challenges we must pay attention to, and what role you think NMTD should play in addressing issues. They will be facilitating in-person listening sessions in six locations throughout New Mexico.
We hope that you are able to participate in the session most convenient for you. Please RSVP via this link.

If you are unable to attend an in-person session, we invite you to learn more about the project and take an online survey here.

If you have any questions or concerns about the survey or the planning process, please reach out to Coraggio's project lead, Matthew Landkamer, at matthew@coraggiogroup.com.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to share your thoughts with us as we begin this important process.

Our best,
New Mexico Tourism Department

Gila Native Plant Society field trip
The Gila Native Plant Society continues its program of monthly field trips with a visit to the Burro Mountains on Sunday, August 18.

Our field trip leader, Hanna Blood, describes the outing: "We'll head to Axle Canyon Preserve in the Big Burros, to the confluence of Axle and Mulberry canyons located on an 83-acre in-holding in the Gila National Forest.  Axle Canyon Preserve is a special place well cared for by its owners.  It will be a moderate/easy hike in sandy, open washes.  Our drive will be 45 minutes each way: HWY 180 north from Silver City, Mangas Valley Road, Redrock Road, Axle Canyon Road.  The dirt road is hard and fairly smooth, with some washboards and a few sandy places along the way.  In the canyons, huge black cherry trees, grand Emory oaks and alligator junipers provide shade to white honeysuckle, canyon grapes, and other wonderful understory surprises.  Herbaceous perennials are coming back since a couple of good monsoon rains drenched the Burros. Come and join me for a plant wander."

For those who are new to the native plants of our area, or just new to botany, during the outing Don Graves will provide an introduction to some of the basic aspects of plant identification.  Meet at 8 a.m. in the south parking lot of the WNMU Fine Arts Center Theatre for carpooling.  All are welcome; GNPS field trips are free and open to the public.  Be sure to wear a hat and sturdy shoes, bring plenty of water and perhaps a snack.  Please be aware that during the summer months the field trip destination may have to be changed in case of fire or washed-out roads.  For further information check our website at www.gilanps.org/events/field-trips/ or contact hannablood@gmail.com

Nomination tips:

Tell a story.
This is our industry's opportunity to celebrate excellence, but that excellence would not exist without the people. A terrific way to highlight achievement and exceeding the call of duty is to share stories about the nominee that demonstrate that fact.
Include numbers.
No matter what award you are submitting a nomination for, there are numbers you can include to validate the success of your employee, team, campaign, event, venue, etc.
Focus on the recent.  These are annual awards, and submissions should focus on the achievement over the past year. Please refrain from including information in your submission prior to 2019 or your most recent complete fiscal year, unless the information provides germane context to the recent achievement (percent increase in visitation, sales, etc.) The judging body will emphasize these criteria when evaluating submissions this year.

Awards Criteria:
Before you begin your submission, we highly encourage you to download the 2019 Top HAT Awards criteria form so you can put together the content for all of the question fields before you submit your nomination.

If a submission is paused for an extended amount of time in the official submission form, it may not submit properly or it may erase your answer fields. In order to best ensure this doesn't happen, we encourage you to answer all of the questions in a saved word document. When you have completed all of the questions, you can copy and paste into the answer fields through the online submission form.

Download the 2019 Top HAT Awards criteria form here.

Post-Submission:
