LAKE CHAMPLAIN IS LOCKED UP!
|
We have learned that the
New York Power Authority
, which oversees the state canal system, halted all routine maintenance and construction that was underway on various canal locks, including Whitehall, in mid-March. The work was regarded as "non-essential" although impacting the opening of a core piece of statewide transportation infrastructure.
In reaching out for information, it was indicated that even if all work resumed after the current expiration of the latest NY Pause order on May 15, it would likely not be possible for the Champlain Canal to fully open for navigation before mid-July.
In further outreach, however, we have been told that they are now evaluating operational options to ensure that New Yorkers have access to the canal system, including the Champlain Canal, if even potentially on a regional basis.
NYPA has promised more information soon. We will stay on top of this developing story.
