Governor's Message for November
| |
Season’s Greetings Rotarians!
Welcome to November in Rotary! This month we celebrate the incredible ROTARY FOUNDATION! The Rotary Foundation transforms gifts into projects that change lives - close to home and around the world! The Rotary Foundation is one of the largest foundations in the world, capable of WORLD-sized, LIFE-changing impact! Our annual contributions, EREY, are collected, invested, and returned to the District in project grants. We also support projects worldwide that provide clean water, fight disease, promote peace, provide basic education, protect maternal & child health, grow local economies, and protect and preserve the environment! The mission of the Foundation is to advance world peace through improving world health, literacy, and the alleviation of poverty, everywhere! What a mission!
It’s thrilling to witness how each club is uniquely celebrating President Gordon McInally’s Theme – CREATE HOPE IN THE WORLD - in your projects, at your meetings, and through every opportunity to spread more love and goodness! This month, as Americans, we also celebrate the dedication and sacrifice of our VETERANS, and a plentiful Harvest Season with family and friends!
Congratulations to all who were able to participate in the ONE SUMMIT last weekend! What a joyful and educational masterpiece led by PDG Margie Haas (Learning Facilitator), involving over 30 Rotarians as leaders, teachers, and facilitators of the event! The ONE SUMMIT 2023 equation: PI + M + F = IMPACT all begins with great SERVICE PROJECTS! The facilitated breakouts afforded opportunity to learn from each other and to imagine new ways to EXPAND our REACH, INCREASE our IMPACT, INCREASE member & community ENGAGEMENT, and ADAPT successfully to a changing environment & attract NEW GENERATIONS of ROTARIANS! I’m convinced that meeting together to share ideas is key to sustaining vibrant clubs with motivated members!
Several Zoom sessions are in the works to stimulate new SERVICE ideas! Arts/Service, Mental Health, Environment, DEI, Empowering Girls, International, Public Image & more offer valuable resources and connections to helps clubs thrive! ALL ROTARIANS ARE INVITED TO JOIN IN!
May 3-4, 2024, Kalamazoo Radisson, is the District’s All Rotarians Conference! The event will be filled with hands-on, hearts-on-fire, educational & leadership development opportunities! AND, it’s happening on a community ART HOP weekend! A truly BRILLIANT and CELEBRATION-filled event! More to come…
For those looking for an international adventure to learn about Guatemala’s CoEd literacy building project - join Rotarian Sally Ernst (longtime supporter) and myself, February 4-11, 2024, on a tour to deliver textbooks, inaugurate computer centers, and share fellowship with other Rotarians from around the world.

One Summit GREAT SUCCESS! | |
What happens when 103 Rotarians sign up to attend a One Summit at the Air Zoo in Portage? They came to learn, and they left with an action plan designed to help their clubs achieve membership growth! The learning was all focused on the secret sauce of how Membership, Public Image, and
The Rotary Foundation working together create
Impact through Membership Growth.
The Air Zoo provided an atmosphere where we could imagine the possibilities for achieving remarkable things for our clubs. More Rotary members leads to more good things for the communities we serve, more service projects, more support for the Rotary Foundation and more Hope in the World.
It was a great day of learning, fun, fellowship, and friendship with
Rotarians from throughout District 6360.
Together we can Move from Hope to Action and Achieve Membership Growth of fifty-five or More by 2024.
See photos HERE and HERE! And video HERE!

RI President Gordon McInally addresses Rotarians on World Mental Health Day
President Gordon McInally spoke virtually to 220 Rotarians on October 10th, World Mental Health Day. Speaking from Rotary headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, he emphasized that Mental Health being a difficult topic, should not be avoided - and to keep in mind that mental health is much more than diagnosable diseases and treatments.
“Mental health is about people finding meaning, connection, purpose, understanding, and resilience. It’s about having someone to talk to about life’s everyday challenges.”
Rotary is all of this!
Gordon affirmed the overwhelming need for mental health services in the U.S. alone. According to the Surgeon General one in five people experience a mental health challenge in any given year. However, cultural stigmas prevent us from discussing critical personal issues.
This is Rotary’s calling!
Rotary stands for embracing humanity and building connections. What we do has always promoted positivity and good mental health practices throughout our individual communities, and through our club interactions. We empower members by creating a safe space to talk about deep personal concerns. As we strengthen our relationships, we strengthen our club - and we strengthen ourselves as well. Research confirms that performing acts of kindness – which is what Rotarians do every day, is the single most effective step for protecting our sense of well-being. That is, making us resilient to life’s challenges.
Those who are struggling sometimes find it difficult to ask for help; whether for fear of being judged, or being rejected, or being perceived as being weak. Whatever the reason, mental health remains a taboo subject and services continue to be in short supply.
Gordon asserts that Rotary is in a unique position to use its Global reach to challenge the mental health stigma. Rotarians can support each other, and use their leadership capacity to highlight mental health needs, advocate for more accessible services, and build bridges with mental health professionals.
By doing these simple things: Raising awareness; Erasing the stigma; and Improving access, we can create hope in the world! And remember, it’s not just, ‘how are you?’. It’s, ‘how are you, really?’.

Quick Tip of the Month
Have a Club
Membership Goal
| |
It was the first snowfall of the year and the hills were ready for sledding. But the 7th grade basketball coach was leading his team through more repetitive drills designed to improve their chance of shooting the ball into the hoop. He noticed a lack of energy, determination, enthusiasm and focus. The snow was a distraction until the coach set a goal. “Team. Make 100 baskets and practice is over.” With sledding in mind there was immediate focus, attention, competition, teamwork and baskets being made by smiling and cheering 7th graders. Twenty minutes later they were speeding down the hill.
Setting a goal can make good things happen. Having a membership goal can help your club stay focused on getting more people to enjoy providing more service. If each of our clubs grows by just one more member by June 30, 2024 then we reach our district goal of
55 More by 2024
Members as of 7-1-23 1993
Members as of 10-30-23 1982
WE CAN DO IT!

The world's first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois, USA, was formed on 23 February 1905 by Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to recapture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth. The name "Rotary" derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices.
Rotary's popularity spread throughout the United States in the decade that followed; clubs were chartered from San Francisco to New York. By 1921, Rotary clubs had been formed on six continents, and the organization adopted the name Rotary International a year later.
As Rotary grew, its mission expanded beyond serving the professional and social interests of club members. Rotarians began pooling their resources and contributing their talents to help serve communities in need. The organization's dedication to this ideal is best expressed in its principal motto: Service Above Self. Rotary also later embraced a code of ethics, called The 4-Way Test, that has been translated into hundreds of languages.
