Coffee with the President.
Winter came to visit! That was definitely the coldest Thanksgiving I can remember, and it got us all thinking winter thoughts: upcoming holidays, fires in the wood stove, where are my wool socks, and so on. The first real snow of the year was welcomed in a few weeks ago, and to most of us it looked beautiful. At the top of that list of people are the hearty men and women of the  Salisbury Winter Sports Association (SWSA). Freezing temperatures and freshly fallen snow are what these folks live for, year in and year out every February for their main event "Jumpfest". Hours and hours of volunteer time, blood, sweat and tears are put in to make this event smooth, rain or shine or sleet or snow or howling wind. Average daily temperatures during February in this part of the world top out at freezing: 32 degrees. The lows dip down into the teens. It is here that the brave people of SWSA are "in their element".
Now going into it's 94th year, Jumpfest is a three day weekend that hosts ski jumpers from throughout New England and New York to compete on the 65 meter jump. Salisbury and surrounding towns will be packed with visitors from near and far, all here to witness the thrill of ski jump competitions, human dog sled races, massive bonfires and masses of bundled-up humans, all while listening to music and making merry. Leading up to that, funds need to be raised and countless volunteers need to be scheduled.
One kick-off event to raise money comes this Saturday, Dec 1st at the  Lakeville Hose Company  at 8am sharp, the annual SWSA Ski Swap and Sale. Rows and rows of winter sporting equipment await you and your family, gently used and brand new items are for sale, from ice skates to cross country and downhill skis to snowshoes and apparel. If you have equipment you would like to sell or donate, you can bring it to the firehouse Friday evening from 4pm - 7pm. More information can be found in the link above, or visit our members at  Sporting A Cause to learn more about this and many other area events that raise money through sports.
Plan on stopping in the the Ski Swap and Sale on Saturday morning, equip yourself for some winter fun, or do a bit of Christmas shopping for someone you love. You'll be helping out a great organization who teaches our children the joys of winter sports, and how to stay active in the worst weather winter has to offer.

Navigating Your Retirement Years
On Wednesday, December 5, from 11am-noon , Jennifer Labrie, HS-BCP Resource Coordinator, Hartford Healthcare Center for Healthy Aging at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital will present, Navigating Your Retirement Years. Guests will learn about the varying levels of care available, types of housing, funding sources and resources in the community. She will discuss the many advantages of proactively preparing for retirement and how to access the assistive services available throughout the region.
Labrie was the Alzheimer’s Association, Connecticut Chapter’s Helpline Director/Northwest Regional Director 10 years. In that role she assessed the needs of people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias; she coordinated services, educated families and advocated on their behalf. As the Coordinator of Hartford HealthCare’s Center for Healthy Aging at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, she connects seniors and caregivers with the most-appropriate resources and support systems to achieve the optimum quality of life. This includes free comprehensive assessments – in-home, by phone, in the office – to determine the best level and type of care that may incorporate in-home assistance, medical alert technology, home modifications, state programs and veteran’s services. Noble Horizons is a continuing care retirement community located at 17 Cobble Road in Salisbury; registration for the program is at https://noblehorizons.org  or 860-435-9851.
