Councilman Weinstein Updates Legislative Committee on Main Street & County Council Transition

After a manual recount completed this week,  Liz Walsh has earned the chance to run against Republican Raj Kuthuria for the District 1 County Council seat in November. Walsh upset incumbent County Councilman Jon Weinstein in the process, and our Legislative Affairs Committee had the chance to speak with him about the impending transition of the County Council and the situation for businesses on Main Street at their monthly meeting Tuesday. Councilman Weinstein let the committee know that the County Council has been meeting for about a year already in preparation for what they knew would be a transition of at least all but one of the County Council seats.

In addition, Councilman Weinstein gave the committee an update on Main Street in Ellicott City. Councilman Weinstein says that about a third of the businesses on Main Street have either reopened or committed to reopening, a third are still undecided, and a third have decided not to return. The Councilman remains hopeful that some of the undecided and even those stating their departure will reconsider and make Ellicott City their business home once again.

Chamber President Leonardo McClarty and the members of the Legislative Affairs Committee also thanked Councilman Weinstein for his service on the County Council and praised him for his willingness to maintain an open dialogue with the Chamber during his term.

Several Chamber Members Now Back Open on Main Street

Some of the businesses Councilman Weinstein mentioned at our monthly Legislative Affairs Committee meeting this week are Chamber members and we want to make sure you are aware that they are ready for business!

Manor Hill Tavern and La Palapa Grill & Cantina are both serving up their delicious food again,  Main Street Oriental Rugs is also open, and  o ur official Chamber Photographer, Pam Long, of Pam Long Photography has continued working both behind the camera, and helping her fellow business owners with their massive cleanup efforts since the flood.

There are many other businesses that have either reopened or plan to, some that have decided not to return, and some that are still trying to make a decision, but Visit Ellicott City is still a great source for the latest information on those lists.

We are also continuing to work with our members and community partners to do what we can to aid the relief efforts for the people and businesses of Historic Ellicott City. Visit Howard County has put together a comprehensive list of the places you can donate funds, time, space and skills, along with a list of upcoming fundraising events. You can find more information about all the ways you can help at  www.visithowardcounty.com/ecstrong/.

If you are a business with spare office, storage or retail space that a dislocated business could use, please email  ksimon@howardchamber.com with the location, amount of space available and how long it will be available.
