YREA spring 2024 news & views

Change is in the wind

Research suggests that wind turbines do not have a negative effect on agricultural lands. If anything, they can increase crop yields by reducing temperature extremes. Danielle Smith in Alberta needs to get with the program & stop griping about the views - as if transmission lines crisscrossing landscapes, oil derricks pumping away or gas flares from petroleum refineries & fossil (natural) gas plants aren't an eyesore. By comparison wind turbines are clean and don't emit particulate matter, mercury or carbon dioxide.

Many bird conservation organizations are now in support of wind energy with Audubon stating that if we don’t take action to curb climate change through renewable energy two-thirds of North American birds are at risk of extinction. With proper planning, forethought & mitigation, wind turbines could be sited in areas of low bird collision risk, away from migratory corridors. Although the Ford government flip flops back to renewable energy after cancelling 750 contracts & paying out more than $230 million in taxpayer money for compensation, we need to triple our wind & solar to reach a net-zero grid by 2035.

April is Earth Month - let's shrink our footprint

Implement lasting changes - take the pledge . Even these small actions will help the earth:

  • Refill shampoo & cleaning product bottles to reduce plastic waste at a location near you
  • Support a local organic farmer by signing up for a CSA program in your area
  • Take e-waste & hazardous waste to your local recycling facility
  • Drop off clothing & household products not in use at a thrift store for resale
  • Join a community clean-up to remove litter or pull invasive garlic mustard when out for a walk
  • Plant a pollinator garden & give nature a helping hand. Use this plant list
  • Turn off unnecessary lights. Eliminate all outdoor night lighting so noctural creatures can thrive
  • Switch to Ecosia search engine that has planted more that 202,000,000 trees

YREA will be at the 2024 Markham Earth Day event April 20th 10am-3pm, 179 Enterprise Blvd. Markham. Drop by our table for a visit & chat.

Companion planting - veggies need friends

Companion planting is when two plants are grown near each other for mutual benefit. In this way, plants can attract beneficial insects & pollinators, deter pests & act as insect repellants, removing the need for toxic chemicals. They can also deter undesirable wildlife. Check out Georgina Garden Centre link for an excellent overview of what to plant & visit them this spring for needed supplies.

YREA's 2023 annual report & recent submission

Read YREA’s annual report for a snapshot of the issues we tackled. Of our 10 submissions, support for Pickering council motion to oppose an airport & federal plastics reduction were the only positives. The remainder raised serious concerns of government actions or lack thereof.

ERO 019-8016 Endangered Species Act 2007 Regulatory Changes, letter signed by 68 organizations expressing concern for the further weakening of habitat protections, especially if exemptions are permitted for early exploration mining. This includes critical habitat for boreal caribou, the Hudson Bay lowlands & Indigenous Protected Areas. Read letter lett
