SHERIFF'S YOUTH LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
The SAL Sheriff’s Youth Leadership Academy (SYLA) is a program within YSU, hosted at various school sites throughout Sacramento county. Traditionally, SYLA is offered as an elective course to expose youth to different aspects of civic leadership, law enforcement, and professional careers. SAL deputies facilitate the program by encouraging youth to own their future by making good choices today.

The Sheriff's Activities League (SAL) is in its second season of the “SAL Friday Night Lights Game of the Week.” The week leading up to the game, YSU deputies visit football practice and hang out with players. On Thursday night after the team's practice, deputies have the opportunity to speak with the entire team and coaches. Lieutenant Trzcinski, Sergeant Meadows, Sergeant Hatch, Sergeant Pfau, Deputy Hauck, Deputy Cotten, Deputy Aduba, and Deputy McDonald serve as guest speakers, while SAL caters a dinner for the entire team to enjoy. On game night, deputies bring out the SAL Humvee and set up a both with prizes and fun gifts for all to enjoy.

On September 6 and 7, Habitat for Humanity hosted its "Rock the Block" event in the greater Sacramento area. It was an opportunity for business leaders and individuals in our Sacramento region to come together and improve our community by cleaning up and fixing yards and homes. Over 400 people, including Sacramento Sheriff's Office personnel, volunteered for the two-day event by painting, doing yard work, and cleaning up community gardens.

SAL held its first ever sporting goods drive this year. The events were held at two local DICK'S Sporting Goods stores in Sacramento. YSU would like to thank DICK'S for discounting the price of their supplies and allowing the sheriff’s office to conduct the sporting goods drive at their locations. Most importantly, SAL would like to give a special thank you to the community for being so generous and donating footballs, basketballs, soccer balls, volleyballs, and rubber balls. This event was a huge success and was able to supply several local schools with much needed playground and P.E. equipment.

BELLA VISTA MARCHING BAND'S 3RD ANNUAL CAR SHOW
YSU attended the Bella Vista Marching Band’s 3rd Annual Car Show on September 28. Classic car owners from all over the area attend and show off their rides. The event helps support the marching band activities throughout the year.

As summer comes to an end, SAL hosted the last Unity in the Community event at Foothill Community Park on September 22. This was yet another successful year, and we want to thank all of the sheriff's office personnel and community members for their participation. Each free, community event had a great turnout with more than 1,000 community members enjoying the festivities. The community is given the opportunity to meet Sheriff Scott Jones and other units such as K9, SED, CSI, Search and Rescue, Air Ops, Gang Suppression Unit, and many more. These events are a great way to bridge the gap between the community and law enforcement, while enjoying a nice summer BBQ. Over 200 backpacks, 100 life jackets, and 25 bikes were given away at each of these events.

ACTIVITY DAY AT BATES ELEMENTARY
The YSU team participated in Activity Day at Bates Elementary School. The mission of Activity Day is to build the school community. Students went from station-to-station and engaged in fun activities throughout the school blacktop. YSU set up a station where the students learned about being in law enforcement and got to ask questions about all the tools on a police officer’s duty belt. Students also got a chance to wear YSU deputies’ vests and even had relay races with them on! Tobacco abatement officers were also present at the event to educate the students about the dangers of tobacco products.

YSU deputies started SHOCK this month (Class 19-1). SHOCK is a referral-based diversion program for youth, 12-17 years old, who are demonstrating risky behavior and are at high-risk of entering the criminal justice system. Class 19-1 has students from Antelope, Citrus Heights, Carmichael, and West Sacramento. Over the course of seven weeks, students will hear from guest speakers who work in various areas of the criminal justice system and participate in a weekly life-skills class presented by the Health Education Council. They’ll go on two field trips – one to Sacramento State University’s Peak Adventures Ropes Challenge Course and the other to California State Prison Solano. The students will also participate in team building and problem solving challenges, as well as a drill and ceremony practice. So far, this class has been extremely successful.

Members of YSU, along with other law enforcement personnel, attended the Student Voices Event held at Liberty Towers. Student Voices is a platform to engage youth in key issues and bolster their involvement in social youth justice. Student Voices gives elected officials, law enforcement, educators, and other key leaders an opportunity to be informed by youth on solutions to end or improve negative situations. Law enforcement leaders shared their perspectives on why it’s important that students come together in peace, how their positive interactions with law enforcement contributes to a thriving community, and the vital role student voices play.

FLORIN HS LAW AND THE WORLD
YSU teaches the junior and senior classes at Florin High School’s Law and the World (LAW) Academy. The mission of the program is to increase diversity in the legal profession by connecting students with the skills and opportunities to be competitive in the job market while acting as advocates for their communities. In addition, SAL sponsors activities and field trips throughout the school year for students to gain firsthand knowledge and experience within the realm of law.

They learn about the performing arts and gain skills such as communication, teamwork, and leadership while being creative and having fun!

The Sheriff’s Activities League partnered with the Start Dream Big organization to provide kids with an eight-session course focused on exploring robotics and coding. Kids learned basic computer code as well as engineering principles. The course also instills a foundation of creativity, exploration, persistence, teamwork, brainpower, and discovery. In October, 34 kids successfully graduated from the fall class!

In efforts to reach out to kids, a program called "Lunchtime with YSU" was created. Deputies are able to foster mentoring relationships with students by handing out junior deputy stickers, providing sports equipment from a recent ball drive, or simply playing sports during their lunch hour! This in turn creates a positive environment that breaks down barriers between law enforcement and students.
