YTP News and Events
Autumn 2020

Here is the latest news from YTP!
In this newsletter you will read about YTP updates, a student-tutor success story, the results of the School Supply Drive, our new YTP recruits and upcoming YTP dates.
YTP Updates
Thank you for helping YTP provide important tutoring support to students in need, particularly during this challenging time. As the new school year kicks off, we have begun with only remote tutoring sessions at each center. We are investigating possibilities for in-person student support, and will add this in as we are able to appropriately address staffing, space access and public health requirements.

Here is a recap of what YTP did this summer and how we served our students:

  • YTP had a successful Summer Program despite not having students there in person. 166 students engaged in online learning activities including: take-home science projects, math, reading, poetry and enrichment activities.

  • YTP supported families with household basic needs, tech support, and learning resources.

  • YTP staff have attended a variety of webinars focusing on racial equity in education, and have been working on building a tutor anti-racism training to help strengthen the program as a whole.
Student-Tutor Success!

YTP 6th grade student Nawal and tutor Kris have been working together at the Lake Washington Apartments tutoring center for three years.

During their online tutoring sessions, Nawal and Kris discuss what she is learning in class and work on her homework.

And as Kris puts it, "We also do at least one long division equation, just to keep those muscles in shape."

Nawal really enjoys working on math with Kris and appreciates how he encourages her to get better at it. She likes how she can get her homework done at YTP and tutoring helped her get an A in history.

In another universe, Nawal and Kris would be detective-cop duo trying to solve the mystery of why math and homework were created. Kris would be the "cranky old detective" and Nawal would be the "hot-shot rookie who bends the rules".
Thank you!
School Supply and Book Drive

This year was a unique year for our annual School Supply and Book Drive. Although we were unable to do traditional collections in person, we received amazing online support through our Amazon wish-list.

Thank you very much to the ladies of the Advocacy and Caring for Children circles and all our other supporters who donated to help YTP students start off the school year with the academic supplies they needed.

In addition to donations pictured, we were able to provide students with greatly needed essential need of computer headsets and graphing calculators.
New to YTP
Welcome Jesse, Hanh and Philip!

This fall, YTP has recruited some new faces, bringing us to a full staff once again! We are pleased to welcome: Jesse, our new Program Assistant, Hanh, the Tutoring Center Assistant at High Point and Philip, our AmeriCorps Volunteer and New Holly Tutoring Center Assistant.
Originally from New Jersey, Jesse has also lived in Oregon, upstate New York, and Havana, Cuba. Over the past few years, he's been a grad student and English teacher. When not working, you can often find him reading, cooking, listening to the blues, or watching the West Wing for the 4th time. He has lived in Seattle for a little over a year now with his partner; together, they have an unrealized dream of one day adopting a dog.
Hanh is the new High Point tutoring center assistant. She moved from Vietnam to Seattle when she was 17. She is also student support specialist working at Washington Middle School helping teachers to create an integrated Math classroom implemented with the project based learning model this year. She earned her Associates in Science, Biological Sciences from Bellevue College. One of Hanh's priorities for this school year is to create a safe, respectful and supportive virtual environment for students to grow and learn.
Philip joins YTP as an AmeriCorps member. For most of his childhood, he and his family traveled around Europe and eventually moved to Canada and then to Seattle. He earned his BA in Political Science at the University of Washington.  Philip enjoys hiking with friends and family, talking about philosophical ideas and cooking! He is excited to give back to the community in need through YTP.
