DONOR INSIGHTS

Thank You for Responding to the Donor Survey

Thank you to everyone who participated in our survey! Your feedback gave us great insight into your interests, what you'd like to learn more about, and how we can better support you, which will inform our work going forward, including some of the upcoming offerings included below.

2025 Donor

Education Series

Thanks to your valuable feedback in our recent survey, we learned that attainable and workforce housing is the #1 issue that donors would like to learn more about (no big surprise). In response to this, YVCF hosted our first donor education event of 2025 - Steamboat's Affordable Housing Policy Priorities-What Are They? on April 29 and May 1, presented by Brad Calvert, principal planner with the City of Steamboat Springs in partnership with the Campaign for the Soul of Steamboat.

If you were not able to attend you can watch a recording of the presentation using the link below.

UPCOMING DONOR EDUCATION EVENT - FOOD SECURITY

Another topic of interest, according to the donor survey responses, is food security. In July, YVCF will be hosting a panel to discuss food security in the Yampa Valley. This will be an education about the statistics around food security, the resources to meet food needs, the impact of funding cuts on food resources, and the gaps that currently exist. We will send out more information about this upcoming educational event soon.

Our Nonprofit

Vetting Process

Confidence in Your Giving – Our Nonprofit Vetting Process

At YVCF, we take due diligence seriously before making grants from donor-advised funds. Our process includes:

501(c)(3) Verification – 501(c)(3) Verification – We confirm that each nonprofit meets IRS regulations for tax-exempt charitable organizations. We also confirm for all Colorado-based entities that they are registered businesses and charitable organizations in good standing with the Secretary of State.

Local Expertise – Our team has deep knowledge of the local nonprofit landscape, ensuring funds are directed to effective and trusted organizations. That knowledge includes an organization’s strengths and core competencies as well as specific funding needs and opportunities that donors might support.

This vetting process gives donors peace of mind, knowing that every grant from their DAF supports reliable and high-impact nonprofits in the Yampa Valley region and beyond.

We would love the opportunity to partner with you in your philanthropy. If you'd like more information or are interested in moving your DAF to Yampa Valley Community Foundation, contact Traci Hiatt at traci@yvcf.org or 970-439-4448.

Utilizing Your QCD for Charitable Giving

Maximize charitable impact and minimize taxes by giving the required minimum distribution (RMD) of an IRA through a qualified charitable distribution (QCD), thus avoiding paying taxes on the distribution.

A donor aged 70 1/2 or older can instruct an IRA administrator to send up to $108,000 per year to one or more qualifying charities, excluding donor advised funds. Donors don't report QCDs as taxable income and don't pay any taxes on the QCD, even if they do not itemize deductions. Consult with your tax professional about this tool.

YVCF can assist you in identifying charities, or setting up a designated fund to distribute the annual QCD over a period of up to 5 years to charities that are pre-determined and designated in writing.

To find out how YVCF can help you with your philanthropic goals, and facilitate giving through a QCD, contact Traci Hiatt, traci@yvcf.org.

Community Grants Donation Opportunity

Yampa Valley Community Foundation, in partnership with the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation and through the generosity of donors like you, offers once-a-year grants up to $10,000 to local nonprofits, based on a robust evaluation process. In addition, organizations working on projects for transformational change may be invited to apply for an Impact Grant up to $30,000.

This is an efficient way to support the broad landscape of nonprofits doing excellent work in the Yampa Valley, while ensuring those grant awards are fully vetted by a thorough process managed by YVCF.

The success of our Community Grants Program is only possible through the support of donor advised fund advisors and private donations to the program.

In 2024, YVCF awarded a record $661,068 to 80 nonprofits in all sectors - Arts & Culture, Environment, Education, Health & Human Services, Youth, Animals and Recreation. We look forward to another successful year of providing important funding to the nonprofits serving the Yampa Valley.
