Volunteer of the Month

Congratulations to Olivia, YVCHR's Volunteer of the Month! A passionate volunteer from Virginia Beach and a dedicated member of the Youth Advisory Board (YAB), she has been instrumental in supporting YVCHR's efforts to expand programs across the Southside.

Olivia joined YVCHR in 2021, contributing an impressive 160+ hours of service to date. In addition to her year-round volunteering, she has participated in two Summer of Service sessions, addressing a variety of community needs with enthusiasm and compassion.

One of Olivia’s favorite volunteer activities is the Lasagna Love project. Combining her love of cooking with her desire to give back, she prepares and shares meals with those in need while creating meaningful connections alongside her fellow youth volunteers. Congratulations, Olivia, and thank you for your dedication to making a difference in our community!

Our donors play a critical role in sustaining and growing YVCHR's programs. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for supporting our mission!

Whether you donated to support summer camps, YVC Summit, our 15-year anniversary, the Canstructure Competition, Give Local 757, or general operations throughout the year, your gift made a profound impact, helping YVCHR engage 1,451 young people in 493 service experiences, totaling 13,858 volunteer hours!

The donation acknowledgement you received via email at the time of your donation includes all the information required for tax filing purposes. If you need another copy of your contributions receipt, please email Anne, Director of Development, who will generate your year-end report.

2025 Canstructure Competition

Calling all K-12 students! Youth Volunteer Corps of Hampton Roads is recruiting teams of elementary, middle and high school students to participate in this year’s Canstructure Competition, a STEM-inspired, team-based challenge that will help provide thousands of meals to local families experiencing food insecurity. Each year, this event activates youth from across our community to help address the issue of hunger while also providing an outlet for their creativity.

What is a CANstructure? A canstructure is a unique work of art that is created by collecting hundreds—sometimes thousands!—of canned food items, which are then used to design and build a 3-dimensional structure that relates to this year’s theme: Connecting Worlds Through Literature!

How do teams compete? Teams will meet to plan and brainstorm their canstructure design and to determine their strategy for collecting canned food donations. Teams may conduct food drives, solicit donations from local businesses or raise funds to purchase the cans needed to build their structure. Once the team has acquired their “building materials,” they will sort, wrap, and carefully stack the cans to create their canstructure. This year’s event will be a hybrid event where elementary teams will build their structures at their schools, and middle and high school teams will build their canstructures at Patrick Henry Mall on April 26, 2025. All teams are invited to attend the awards ceremony at center court @ 2:30pm. Winning teams will receive trophies…but best of all, thousands of pounds of food will be donated to the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank!

[NOTE: It is FREE to participate; there is no registration fee. All team members will receive an event t-shirt and compete for team trophies.]
