November 2024

On October 19, 2024, over 240 guests from near and far joined us at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront to celebrate YVCHR's 15-year anniversary! Program leaders and youth from across the YVC network, the entire team from YVC Headquarters (Kansas City), and over 120 locals from the Hampton Roads region all made it an extra special evening. Together we paid tribute to young people who are Lighting the Way to stronger communities!

With fantastic music from Brother Lucy, an epic silent auction, and a nail-biting ring dance (heads-or-tails style), there was something fun for everyone. Congratulations to Kristin Stephens, who wont the GOLDEN TICKET (she’s going to Italy!), and huge thanks to Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones for providing words of inspiration to us all. Most importantly, we honored all of the amazing youth volunteers who earned special recognition for their efforts to serve their communities with compassion and commitment!

This gala served as the culmination of a 2-day conference co-hosted by YVCHR and YVC Headquarters. The 2024 YVC Summit was an incredible success, with representation from Canada, the U.S. and Uganda, including 24 workshops, an immersive poverty simulation and time for fun at the beach with new friends! Youth who attended Summit also completed 4 service projects: bundling 12,500 diapers for the GHR Diaper Bank, building 5 playhouses for families battling pediatric cancer with ROC Solid Foundation, constructing 4 benches for a local preschool, and making 8 shepherd’s pies (from scratch) to feed 50 unhoused members of the community in partnership with PiN Ministries. Special thanks to our annual partners and event sponsors for supporting the YVC Summit & YVCHR's Lighting the Way Gala (see below)!

Celebrating 100,000 Hours

of Youth Service!

Since 2009, YVCHR has been committed to one mission: engaging youth in team-based service experiences that build life and work skills while inspiring a lifetime ethic of service. In October, we exceeded 100,000 total hours of service--a truly remarkable milestone and a testament to the commitment of over 4,900 youth volunteers, as well as the partnerships that have made these service-learning experiences possible throughout YVCHR's 15-year history!

We enlisted local artist Cherilyn Colbert to create the artwork below as a tribute to the valuable collaborations that YVCHR has forged with dozens of organizations across our region, allowing youth to directly support their missions in a high-quality, hands-on way. From serving the unhoused, the hungry, individuals with special needs, veterans, children, the elderly and isolated, children, and the environment, youth have made a significant impact here in Hampton Roads!

We are grateful to SEEN Family Eyecare for their generous contribution toward the completion of this pictorial map--a visual representation of YVCHR's impact!
