October 2022

Congratulations, Silin!

YVCHR's Volunteer of the Month

Silin has been a wonderful addition to the YVC family for the past two years! Not only is she an enthusiastic, hardworking member of the Youth Advisory Board, she has also been integral in establishing a school club at Hampton Roads Academy. Currently, she is leading both the planning and implementation phases of a mural project at a local elementary school, which will be completed this spring.

When asked about her experience with YVC, she said she "love(s) volunteering because (she) believe(s) making a difference starts with the people you can directly impact around you, and YVC let’s (her) do that."

Silin's favorite partner organization is Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), and she recalls that one of her most meaningful service moments was getting to deliver the beds they built during a SHP project. During the delivery, she remembers one young boy running and climbing into his new bunk bed and proclaiming "it's a miracle!"

Outside of YVC, Silin (pictured below) enjoys figure skating, sketching, and writing poems!

While Silin has experienced her fair share of meaningful moments with YVC, she also says YVC is setting her up for success in the future. Through YVC, she has developed leadership skills and learned how to effectively work with others--for example, sharing tasks to ensure projects and meetings operate efficiently. She added, "It’s also interesting learning about our (partner) organizations and taking inspiration from them on how to improve the community."

Did you know that your online shopping purchases can help fund YVCHR programs? Consider designating Youth Volunteer Corps of Hampton Roads as your charity of choice!

  • AmazonSmile will donate 0.5% of your eligible purchases on Amazon to YVCHR.
  • Simply shop at smile.amazon.com. The donation will be made at no extra cost to you.
  • Though 0.5% is not a large donation and it isn't intended to replace your regular charitable contributions, AmazonSmile is still a great way to maximize your impact! It all adds up!
Community Knights Bingo
High school students and adults who would like to help local schools and nonprofit organizations (like YVCHR!), please consider signing up to volunteer at Community Knights Bingo. Proceeds from bingo are donated back into the Hampton Roads community!

NOTE: Community Knights will sign volunteer logs for those who need evidence of service hours. This is not a YVCHR-facilitated activity, so a team leader from YVCHR will not be on-site.
