Welcome to YWCA Connections Newsletter

We are so grateful for your generous support of our community.

Every day, our Midtown building is a hub of activity—babies, toddlers and preschoolers learning to be curious and kind; youth exploring movement and leadership; adults overcoming their fear of water; and seniors connecting over free weights and coffee. There is something for everybody. And everybody belongs.

There is much to be grateful for. At the same time, our community continues to feel the lasting impacts of Operation Metro Surge, and federal support for vital community programs like ours continues to decline.

In moments like this, our role is clear: we keep each other safe. That’s why YWCA Minneapolis continues to show up for children in their earliest years, create pathways for youth, and ensure people of all ages have access to movement, connection and care. This is equity in action.

We’re proud to share what your support makes possible in our new quarterly newsletter, and we look forward to all we’ll build together this spring.

Eureka!–Networking 101

YWCA Minneapolis Girls Inc. Eureka! is a five-year STEM career preparation program that helps girls and gender-expansive youth build confidence, explore careers and prepare for what comes next through college exploration, internships, mentorship and hands-on learning. Each year, more than 100 participants take part at no cost to their families.

In early March, more than 40 students gathered at Midtown to network with 15 volunteer mentors representing careers in medicine, engineering, law, marketing and human resources. The day was lively and energizing, with students asking thoughtful questions about career paths, college experiences and what it takes to get there.

Watch for more information about Eureka! events this summer!

Sexual Health Education Across the Metro

While Minnesota is one of 27 states that require schools to provide sexual health education, state mandates do not require that the curriculum include topics like sexual orientation, gender identity, or consent. As a result, many students receive incomplete or no education. These gaps have deepened as federal funding for prevention continues to decline.

YWCA Minneapolis Contact Plus program is improving those odds, one classroom at a time. Each year, more than 300 young people across 10 Twin Cities sites come together to learn, ask questions, better understand themselves, and build healthy relationships. It’s a space where they feel comfortable being curious—and safe enough to laugh, too.

“I feel like I never knew I could be this confident in front of other people. Being in Contact Plus felt comfortable, and I’m fairly shy around new people.”

—Ellie, 8th grade

Led by skilled YWCA health educators, each class creates a space where students feel seen, heard and respected. No question is deemed too silly or unworthy. Topics include pregnancy, sexual health, relationships, consent and hygiene.

Contact Plus continues to meet a critical need that many schools lack the resources to address. For more than 30 years, Contact Plus has partnered with schools and shelters across the metro to advance educational equity for students who need it most.

First-Time Triathlete Faces Her Fears

Support shows up through individuals who step forward in powerful ways. Katy McClure is a first-time YWCA Minneapolis Women’s Triathlon racer. She’s using the triathlon as an opportunity to face her fear of open-water swimming, honor her mother and grandmother and fundraise for early childhood education, youth development and wellness programs.

“Growing up, my mom was essentially a single mother,” Katy said. “Raising us with a disability, she looked for support from other women. So, I feel that raising funds or awareness of how YWCA empowers women is really meaningful.”
