November 2017

Please welcome our new Executive Director...

Cheri Kilty was born in Muncie, Indiana and grew up in Kokomo, Indiana. She has been involved with nonprofit agencies helping women and children since 1984. Cheri grew up going to the YWCA in her hometown attending swimming, tennis, dancing, and leadership classes offered for young women. It was during this time that Cheri learned the value of making a difference in her community. Never did she dream that would lead her to a life of service in different communities including 4 other YWCAs before landing at the Yakima YWCA. Cheri moved to Washington State in 1999 and immediately went to work with nonprofit agencies providing programs and services to victims of domestic violence and homelessness. Cheri moved to Yakima in August 2017 bringing with her two Sphynx cats. She loves connecting people together who have like-minded interests and mentoring young women as they navigate their career worlds. She also enjoys late night talk radio when all the mysteries of the world are discussed.

Also joining the YWCA team are...

Ashley Brown joined the YWCA in September as the HR and Finance Director. She has previously worked in public accounting sector doing tax work and audit work in Montana and Washington. Ashley has a bachelor's degree in accounting from Montana Tech of the University of Montana.  Ashley is licensed as a CPA in Montana and is in the process of transferring her license to Washington. She has recently moved back to Yakima from Montana with her family.

Quinn Dalan joined the YWCA as the Director of Fund Development and Community Outreach on November 1.  Quinn is an attorney who has previously worked as a domestic violence prosecutor and, more recently, a public defender.  She is actively involved in the community and has led fundraising efforts for various nonprofit agencies with which she is involved.  She lives in Yakima with her family.

 Domestic Violence Awareness Month

We were busy with a successful Domestic Violence Awareness Month during October.  Thank you for your support and participation!

We started the month with our annual fundraiser, the Purple Purse Campaign through the Allstate Foundation, which highlights the economic abuse that prevents victims of domestic violence from leaving their abuser.  Financial abuse is the #1 reason women stay in abusive relationships.  Your donations help us continue our mission to empower women and provide them the resources that allow them to take the brave step of leaving their abuser.  IF YOU DIDN'T HAVE A CHANCE TO DONATE DURING THE CAMPAIGN, YOU CAN STILL DONATE ON OUR WEBSITE NOW THROUGH MONDAY AT 11:30AM FOR ADDITIONAL CHANCES TO WIN ONE OF THREE PURPLE PURSES DESIGNED FOR PREVIOUS CAMPAIGNS. DONATE HERE NOW!

On October 26, 2017 we honored the lives of women who have been killed by their domestic violence abusers and celebrated survivors who have been able to leave at our Domestic Violence Vigil.  We were grateful to be joined by survivors, community members, Yakima Police Department, Yakima County Prosecuting Attorney's Office and Aspen Victim Services.

For the first time this year, we participated with ROCK SOLID FITNESS for the only exclusively female race in Yakima, Warrior Women Run 5k.  Approximately 300 women came out to run and support the YWCA.  A huge THANK YOU to Becky Jones with Rock Solid Fitness for putting it all together.  We can't wait for next year's race!

We also had fun at Paint Nite, where a portion of the ticket sales were donated to the YWCA, and a calendar reveal for our 2018 First Responder's Calendar at Bale Breaker.  A special THANK YOU to our calendar sponsors - Espresso Express, Nelson Management Strategies, McDonald's, The Print Guys, Gypsy Muse Marketing, Mercy Medical, Dunbar Jewelers, and Washington Broadband, IncCalendars are available for purchase at the YWCA Yakima, Persimmon Boutique and on our website.

2016-17 Annual Meeting
