Pesach is approaching, and with all the preparation that it requires, this pre-Yom Tov time can be hectic and busy. Yom Tov itself can be a very overwhelming time with the changes in schedule and the overall lack of structure. With a bit of preparation and putting the proper support in place, we hope that Yom Tov can be a little less challenging and possibly relaxing and inspiring.
I put together a list of some practical tips to keep in mind over Yom Tov. We also strongly recommend you reach out for help! Whether it is from your own inner circles or from outside organizations (such as Yahalom!), Klal Yisrael is there for each other in times of need, and don’t be ashamed to ask.
Structure is like air for so many of our children. Even if the structure is less rigid than your regular day-to-day routine, a mini schedule can be helpful too. Visuals are always helpful, and they provide predictability, easier transitions, a sense of security, and something for your child to look forward to each day.
- Prepare a Variety of Activities That Your Child Will Enjoy
A variety of activities can be very helpful as children benefit from engaging in different sensory experiences throughout the day. While some children may need more active activities, a variety of activities will keep your child regulated throughout the day.
- High Impact Activities: Going to the park, jumping on a trampoline, running races, climbing, rolling, playing hide and seek, etc.
- Low Impact Activities: Playing with fidget toys, swinging on a swing, taking a walk, blowing bubbles, reading a book, puzzles, etc.
- Tactile: Providing your child with deep pressure can be a very calming and powerful way to connect with your child. Massages throughout the day or before bedtime can be a nice way to connect, let your child process his or her day with you, and be calming and organizing for their wound-up sensory systems.
- Involve Your Child in the Yom Tov Activities
No matter your child's level, find a way to help your child experience the Yom Tov by joining in the way s/he can and/ or giving this child the opportunity to help.
The guests, the noise, the excitement can be a lot of stimulation for your child. Have a quiet area set up where your child can escape to. It can be something as simple as a few pillows, dimmer lighting, and some of their favorite toys and books.
- Know Your Child’s Communication Signals
Be aware of your child’s needs and what may trigger them. If you let other family members know, they too can be aware and proactive.
Keep in mind that the foods are very different on Pesach, and this may affect your child in some way. Some parents take advantage of this time to try a gluten free diet if that is something they are thinking about, since most of the food is gluten free anyway (except for Matzah).
Wishing you a beautiful Yom Tov and the experience of true freedom!!
