A Message from the Principal

Dear Yasuhara Families,

What a great start to the school year! We're so grateful for our amazing staff and students. Year three has been the best start yet. Our students have had the opportunity to participate in so many great activities already.

Athletics are in full swing: our tackle football team won their first two games, our cross country runners are crushing it, our softball team has been representing, and our flag football team is excited for their first scrimmage. Thank you to all who come support your children at their athletic events.

Clubs will begin soon, so watch backpacks for permission slips. Our ASB is already working at full speed! Our first spirit week is right around the corner, along with the first dance of the year. Students who meet the criteria are invited to attend the fall dance with parent permission slips.

I'm also excited to announce that the Hifumi Society has once again purchased sweatshirts for all students. We're incredibly grateful for this generous donation and for their never-ending support of our students and staff. Stay tuned for the big reveal, coming the second week in October.

Finally, thank you for filling out your CEP survey. This survey helps ensure our students get any additional support necessary. By submitting this survey, we can help our students waive fees, including those for Band/Orchestra and ASB. Reach out to our office staff if you have any questions. It's going to be a great month, Phoenix!

Sincerely,

Stephanie Lundberg

Phoenix Art on Display

Phoenix Art is displayed at The Community Building downtown for the month of October! Go take a look and see our students' poetry and artwork about the Spokane River.

Ms. Konshuk's last year's seventh grade took part in a Humanities project in their Washington State History class to answer the question: How do we determine what is fair usage of our rivers, not only for us but also for those people who will be living here after us?

The project combined research about the river systems in Washington State with poetry in English class. They were challenged to write a poem personifying our Spokane River. Along with writing from the river’s perspective they needed to also include ideas about the formation of the river, the location, the history, the value of the river, and how to protect the river. They then created artwork to go with their poetry.

There is some great thinking happening at Yasuhara Middle School!

Badminton Fun

Students of all grades participated in the badminton unit for physical education in the month of September. Students practiced their serves, passes, and volleys in matches against each other.

One Deck of Cards

CCLR students participate in an activity called “How many life skills can I demonstrate with one deck of cards?” Some of the skills included listening, organization, flexibility, persistence, and working under pressure.

This was a great activity and students were reflective on the skills needed to know after high school all while having some fun with playing cards!

Mrs. Konshuk's

Social Studies Classes

The next project for Mrs. Konshuk's World Civilizations class is the Spokane Nation before 1858. There will be some place-based learning with this project. We will be going to Waikiki Springs Trail to explore native plants with Steven Eddington with Inland Northwest Conservacy. Then we plan to head to the Spokane House to explore First Nations' culture before white settlement. We will be speaking with rangers and, hopefully, a tribal historian. We will end the project with a visit to Steptoe Butte with rangers there.

We're looking for volunteers for these trips! If you are interested, please email Bobbi Konshuk at BobbiK@spokaneschools.org.

Upcoming ELA

Field Trip

On October 10th, Mrs.Konshuk's class will be taking their first trip of the year. ELA classes will be going to the Museum of Arts and Culture (MAC) with a grant from the Visual Thinking Strategies program. We are going to check out a few exhibits and then practice the art of printmaking. MAC has been a great community partner in growing our students' communication skills while practicing strong critical thinking skills.
