YEAR 2000

Dear Friends,

I have just authored a book on Year 2000 drawn from thousands of saved documents in the years leading up to and just following the Millennium. This is our story; the story of people who did not know the outcome of the Year 2000 computer date crisis. The story of collaboration and accomplishment.

I hope you enjoy reading this tale of rivalry, conflict, and ultimate success and cooperation.

About Year 2000 the Book

The Inside Story of Y2K Panic and the Greatest Cooperative Effort Ever

By Nancy P. James

Published by Prometheus Books

Year 2000: The Inside Story of Y2K Panic shares the untold story of the actors operating on the global stage responsible for managing computer hardware and software for Year 2000 compliance, thus keeping national infrastructures, finance, and commerce functioning.

Success was only possible because people across industries, from programmers, executive management and legal counsel to President Bill Clinton himself, worked tirelessly to offset disaster.

However, there were some Y2K interruptions; for a brief period not widely publicized, the U.S. lost all satellite reconnaissance at 7:00 PM EST, on December 31, 1999 (midnight GMT 1/01/2000).

As a leading consultant and speaker on the challenges of Y2K during the lead-up to the new millennium, author Nancy P. James was directly involved in preparation for Y2K on the local and global stage.

Using first-person experience, primary source documents outlining Y2K issues, anxieties, and the actions, influences, opinions, and strategies of those involved, James reveals the untold story of the behind-the-scenes scramble that made Y2K compliance a success story. James tells the contemporaneous story of those actors who did not then know the outcome of their efforts.

About the Author

Nancy P. James was educated as a theoretical mathematician, followed by her first professional decade as a computer systems analyst and consulting on pre-internet national networks. In 1982 James opened her insurance agency specializing in technology liability risks and risk management.

When the millennium and Y2K computer challenges gained traction, James, lead author of a pioneering early Y2K article for the Boston Bar Journal, was offered a place on the 1997 American Bar Association annual meeting’s technology panel, and subsequently an invitation to address international insurance experts in London.

With the new millennium, James’s attention turned to internet risks and management, crafting the nation’s first internet liability insurance policy in 1997. For more than four decades, James has been widely published in the areas of technology liability, global risks, and cyber risk management.
