Year End Appeal

is

Another Challenge

While this headline may read like another hurdle to be overcome, it really is meant to convey that yet another generous alumnus has come forward to offer another sizable gift opportunity. That is, for the third time this year, a third generous alum has offered a Match Challenge Gift aimed at motivating as many Hawks as possible to make a gift to Hudson Catholic by our June 30th fiscal year-end.

All gifts made in June will be doubled in value, up to $15,000 in total, as a means for assuring that we can cross the finish line successfully for our $300,000 goal for this year’s ‘1964: The Fund for Hudson Catholic’.

As you know, this date and this goal are very important components of our operating strategy for the year. Meeting the goal enables us to balance our books for the year, avoid debt, and offer additional tuition assistance to some families who, commit and try as they might, will fall short of meeting their tuition obligations for the year.

To the extent we can rise to our goal with new funds, it will shore up our operating position by avoiding tuition write-offs.

Please give now and give generously for these reasons.

Wall of Honor Celebration

Honors 4 with Athletic Immortality

at Hudson Catholic

Hawk alumni turned out in force to support and honor their classmates and friends being inducted on to The Wall of Honor on Friday, May 17th. And for good reason -- President-Principal Terry Matthews hit it squarely on the head in his introductory remarks, citing all four honorees as even better people than they were athletes, and that is saying something, indeed. Because, boy, were they great on the court, pitch, field, and mat!

First up, Ed Roselle '80, the first wrestler to go on 'The Wall', captured All County, All District, and All State honors with 68 wins and 35 pins in his wrestling career, in addition to playing on the offensive line for the football Hawks. The outpouring for him, with chants of 'Ed-die! Ed-die! reminiscent of his glory days, was heartwarming. Former coaches Ed Agresta and Jerry Caputo on hand lent an extra nice touch for Ed and many others.

Next, it was Reggie Cameron '13, who led the Hawks to the most victories ever recorded in one season (29) with All County, All State, and HCIAL Player of the Year performances. He was unable to attend the event due to obligations to his employer, the New York Knicks, whose season continued to this very night. Reggie managed to join in with taped video remarks that were about the most gracious you could ever want to hear, with many 'thank you's, among them, to Coaches Nick Mariniello and Jamal Slappy, Retired President and Hall of Famer Richard Garibell, all his teammates, his sacrificing mom and dad, and effusive thanks to best friend and teammate Kavon Stewart '13, who Reggie described as dishing off the ball to him for the majority of his 1,700 points over his three-year career as a Hawk.

Kristin Cunning '15 was lauded by Terry Matthews as a person who succeeded, greatly, at everything she attempted. In her first 3 years at Hudson Catholic, she excelled in Basketball and Softball, earning All-County honors in both. In her Senior year, she decided to play Soccer and, of course, earned All-County honors there, too. But her greatest work is that which she has done, does now, and will do -- having worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for five years on the Expert Medical Opinion Team dedicated to helping patients get better treatment options and long-term care. One more highlight for Kristin's evening is that she became the first Legacy Hawk to make it on to 'The Wall', being the daughter of beaming dad, John Cunning '79!

Bobby England '83 was introduced by fellow Wall member and his varsity soccer coach, Hall of Famer John Cruitt, as a supremely talented Hawk who played in goal for two years because we needed a Keeper, then got turned loose to play upfront in his junior year, then moved back to midfield in his senior season in order to anchor both the offense and defense. In the process, he led 'a dominant' 1982 Hawk squad to their very first Hudson County Championship in what also turned out to be an All County season for him.

The Rocky Pope Gym was filled with 200+ people in what attendees described as a truly first class event. Kudos go out to Ms. Jill Cypher, Director of Special Events, for organizing, with great assist for the technical segments and showmanship of Hall of Famer Larry Basinski '70 and his able assistant, Frank Martineau '75, on behalf of the Hudson Catholic Alumni Association. Jill received great support from Jenine D'Addetta of the Advancement Office, and volunteers Brianne Brown '20 and Nicole Acanto '21.

Message From The Prez

Last week we graduated 120 young men and women in the Class of 2024. Each year, I speak to the graduates before they leave. The day before Graduation, Mrs. Barbi reminded me that this was, for most of our graduates, the first real graduation ceremony they’ve had since kindergarten. That’s right! Most schools didn’t have group events like graduations back in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic raged across the United States. It made me stop and think and look at this class with renewed admiration. What a resilient bunch of students!

In my address to the students, I said, “You went from no graduation to starting your high school careers wearing masks. The upside is that you’re probably the first class that can recognize each other just by your eyes. But amazingly, you figured it out on your own. We adults were counting the number of kids at lunch tables and measuring the proper distances between desks in classrooms, and you were figuring out how to close those distances, both literally and figuratively. You managed to bond despite the world’s attempt to prevent it. And that ability to find a way. To make it happen. To push through. To create relationships in the midst of chaos is going to serve you well in the years to come.”

I am quite certain that the Class of 2024 is going to do wondrous things. The Hawks Nest is a place where students of all backgrounds come together and then grow together. They have navigated a tumultuous four years and have come out on top. This class modeled the valuable Lasallian lessons of caring for others in a time when interpersonal relationships were actually discouraged. The reality is that the power of Hudson Catholic and its community was more than even the worst pandemic in 100 years could handle. Hawks fly high…no matter what.

Celebrating Our Dear Faculty

Mrs. Anna Schreiber

Mr. Phil Gazzale

After 19 years of teaching at Hudson Catholic, beloved Science Faculty member Anna Schreiber has decided to retire at the end of this school year. Anna first affiliated with Hudson Catholic when son Nick Lucci '04 entered in 2000 and #2 son Anthony Lucci '08 enrolled in 2004. She became a 'football mom', providing pre-game meals for the team, and a 'wrestling mom' who was there with goodies and snacks for the boys following weigh-ins, and went on to active membership in the Mother's Guild, including as VP and President. She came on to Faculty in 2005, teaching Science, primarily Physics. Over the years, she moderated the Lasallian Youth, and the Environmental and Cooking Clubs, and coached Tennis and Bowling, claiming a State Title in Bowling 2016. While we wish Anna a wonderful retirement, we have a strong feeling we will continue to see her around the campus and in the Hudson Catholic community. THANK YOU, ANNA!

President-Principal Terry Matthews, in announcing Anna’s retirement, said: "Anna is going to be missed here at 790 Bergen Ave. Not only has she been an incredible educator, but she has been an even better ambassador for Hudson Catholic, sending both sons to Hudson Catholic, providing service with the Mothers Club, and was instrumental in raising money for the students. Anna represents the very best of Hudson Catholic."

We are also delighted to announce a Faculty milestone and congratulate Mr. Phil Gazzale, already a member of the Hudson Catholic Hall of Fame (2007), on the completion of his 50th year of service to Hudson Catholic, easily the longest such tenure in the history of our school! And the great news is that 'Phil' intends to return to campus in the fall for his 51st campaign, teaching Biology and Honors Biology, and plans to enjoy every minute of it! THANK YOU, PHIL!

Theatre Program is Soaring

Under the leadership of Assistant Principal Sarah Degnan-Barbi, and Ms. Erin Drennan-Eckel, the Hawk Theatre Program continues to take substantial steps in its productions on The Jack Campion Stage at Hudson Catholic, in establishing its actors as bona fide talents, and in building a pipeline of interest in grammar school age students for ultimate enrollment at The Home of The Hawks.

The Director of Admissions for the New York Conservatory for the Dramatic Arts selected Into the Woods as a rising star production, and having attended the performance, made scholarship offers to several of our actors. Following our opening night performance, three players were accepted into the Conservatory's 2-year degree program and were offered a total of $35,000 in annual scholarships -- Alex Mejia: $15,000; Ashley Batista: $10,000; and Alejandro Diaz: $10,000, all per year. Alejandro is only in the 10th grade, but the Director was so impressed with his talent that he offered him the acceptance. There is a chance his scholarship offer will increase as he continues to perform.

Additionally, seven performers received acceptance and a $1,000 scholarship to the 4-week summer Acting Intensive Workshop in New York City. They are: Krystal Council, Peyton Morgan, Olivia Morgan, Jadyra Amaya Garcia, Julia Ortiz, Luke Mullins (grandson of Bruce Bock ’75), and Abigail Degnan (daughter of Fred Barbi ’86), whose admission is deferred until she is 14. The Director will be returning to see these students perform next year, at which point they will be considered for scholarships to the 2-year degree program.

In total, our production of Into The Woods earned our students $77,000 in scholarship money, all due to their truly professional and outstanding performances!

Our New York Conservatory Scholarship Winners

Jadyra Amaya Garcia, $1,000. Olivia Morgan, $1,000. Julia Leigh Ortiz, $1,000. Alex Mejia $15,000, Ashley Batista, $10,000. Alejandro Diaz, $10,000. Krystal Council, $1,000. Peyton Morgan, $1,000.

Abigail Degnan, daughter of Frederick Barbi '86, and Luke Mullins, grandson of Bruce Bock '75, were each awarded $1,000.

Thespian Recognition

2024 brings with it inductions into Hudson Catholic's inaugural chapter of the International Thespian Society, the only theatre honor society for middle and high school students in the United States. The Society recognizes, rewards, and encourages student achievement and celebrates the work of students in all aspects of theatre performance and production. To qualify for membership, students must be involved in two productions - musical or drama - consisting of performance, stage crew, tech crew, or front of the house/publicity crew, and they must do so yearly in order to maintain their membership over the course of their high school years. The troupe's leaders are Mrs. Sarah Degnan-Barbi and Mrs. Erin Drennan-Eckel. Thirty Hawks are eligible for the inaugural chapter: 16 for Performance, seven for Production, and seven for Stage & Tech Crew, among seven Seniors, 12 Juniors, and 11 Sophomores.

Summer Stock

Summer Theatre returns to Hudson Catholic, this year running from July 1st to the 25th (Mondays through Thursdays, 12-3pm), culminating in a production of Disney's Moana on July 26th. The program is open to students entering grades 4 through 8. Cost is $175 for the full program. Contact sbarbi@hudsoncatholic.org for more information.

Hawk Walk Tradition Continues

The Hawk Walk-a-thon has morphed into a school-wide Field Day. The route travels Glenwood Avenue down to Kennedy Boulevard, over to Lincoln Park, and down to the enclosed field. After a couple of hours playing games, the Hawks retrace the route back to the Nest and lunch for all. The Field Day is a fabulous bonding event and raises the profile of the school within the community.

When Hawk Baseball Won A

State Title in Hudson’s 50th Year

Our baseball Hawks have always waged competitive and successful campaigns. But for perspective about how competitive high school baseball has always been in Hudson County and New Jersey, it is useful to look back upon some important firsts in our program’s history.

The 1974 team led by All County players Jim Spanarkel ‘75 and Pete Morales ‘74, were the first Hawk team to capture the South Hudson Division title (with the first 20-win season in school history) and move on to the County Championship game, bowing 1-0 to Memorial. (The '75 and '77 Hawk teams repeated the South Division championships only to falter in the County Title games.)

Ten years after, the 1984 squad won our first County title. That team featured Wall of Honor member John Furch ‘85, who received All County honors, as did Pat Rey '85, John Bean '86, Richie Flynn '84, Marshall O'Keefe '85, and Kaz Szulc '84, along with John Curry '85, Steve Novello '84, and Tom Bertolini '85.

Thirty years after that, led by All County and All State Brandon Pilovsky ‘14 and coached by former All State Hawk, Alberto Vasquez ’99, the Hawks captured the school’s first, and only State Championship! The roster, consisting of All County players Matt Falotico ‘14 and Chris Garcia ‘15, along with Victor Guzman ’14, Mike Simone ’14, Matt Bolger ’14, Michael Albunia ’14, Ralph Mena ’14. Jonathan Rivera ‘14, Kevin Suarez ’14, Mike Feinstein ’15, Rob Shivers ’15, Michael Kiel ’16, Joseph Albunia ’16, Mike Trice ‘16, Gabe Tosado ’17, and Andrew Troya ‘17, finished with a season record of 21-7, bowing in the quarterfinals of the Hudson County Tournament to Kearny, but forging on to the Non Public Group B State Title with a 7-0 win over St. Joseph’s of Hammonton behind a two-hit Pilovsky masterpiece on the same day the seniors received their diplomas at morning Graduation!

Pilovsky, who attended Hudson Catholic for only two years, managed to make a great impact on varsity baseball, before moving on to NJIT Baseball. In pitching 137 innings, he whiffed 186 batters, amassed a 16-5 won-loss record, and boasted a stingy 1.07 Earned Run Average, which earned him the HCIAL Pitcher of the Year award in 2014, First Team All County honors in 2013 and 2014, and Second Team All-State honors in 2014. Coach Vasquez, meanwhile, came away with the HCIAL Coach of the Year Award.

The Legend Continues

Bill Mykytka ’77 took exception to our explanation of the origin of the Faa’s nickname, as follows:

“[Mike Perchun] Perch’s memory is failing him! The Faa got his nickname in Chinatown but at 69 Bayard Street (New Ling Ho). The owner, Kevin, asked Eddie his name, to which he replied, “Eddie Ford.” Kevin mispronounced Ford and said, “Oh, Eddie Faa!” Ron Steinmetz (“Stymie”) was with him and continued to call him Eddie Faa, Uncle Faa, Faa, and finally, ‘The Faa!’ Faa, Tommy Shine '78, and me used to go back to the scene of the crime and owner, Kevin, was always happy to welcome back, “Eddie Faa!”

In a Memorial Day distribution to the Hudson Catholic community, paying tribute to our fallen Hawk heroes, Marlon Jackson '97 and William 'Billy' Neil '87, we incorrectly listed Billy as '97 below his photo, although managed to get '87 right in the letter. We sincerely regret that error in such a solemn communication.
