Researchers Analyzed Data from 1,395 Patients

JAMA Network Open (Starke, SJ, et al.) 12.12.2023, published online “Time to Diagnosis and Treatment of Lyme Disease by Patient Race.” Investigators found that Black patients were more likely to be diagnosed with disseminated manifestations and experience longer time to appropriate treatment. This is one of the few large studies of racial differences in Lyme disease in an academic setting and is consistent with findings of prior surveillance and insurance claims studies. Read more.

Johns Hopkins Medicine Receives NIH Grant Funding

Continuing Research Through Their SLICE Studies

Transforming Lyme Disease Research – Impact Report 2023. The Johns Hopkins Medicine – Lyme Disease Research Center has announced that they have been awarded National Institutes for Health (NIH) R01 funding to study post-treatment Lyme disease. This R01 involves five different departments at Johns Hopkins Medicine: Neurology, Psychiatry, Rheumatology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Radiology, which highlights the value of a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the biology of Lyme disease. Members of the research team are principal investigators for two of the seven R01s awarded, and are co-investigators on a 3rd R01. Read more.

The CDC Issued a Health Advisory

Fox News, Melissa Rudy, 12.10.2023, reports on “Deadly Rocky Mountain spotted fever outbreak in California likely came from Mexico, CDC says.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a health advisory on 12.08.2023 advising of an outbreak of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) southern California which has hospitalized five people and resulted in three deaths between late July and December 2023. All affected people had recently travelled to or lived in (within two weeks of illness onset) the city of Tecate, state of Baja California, Mexico. The pathogen (Rickettsia rickettsii) which causes RMSF can be transmitted by brown dog ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus), closely associated with domestic dogs in both urban and peri-urban settings in this region. State Psychedelic Programs Are Pushing the Boundaries

JAMA Network, 12.08.2023, published, “State-Regulated Psychedelics on a Collision Course With FDA.” In this online viewpoint article, Mason Marks, MD, JD, discusses that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) may soon approve psychedelics for treating conditions of depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and other indications, but that psychedelics are currently considered Schedule I controlled substances with high potential for abuse; and are currently not accepted for medical use. Team Wins Gold Medal in Paris

The United States Air Force Academy (Roughton, R. and Troth, J.) 12.06.2023, published “Team wins gold for iGEM research in Paris.” The U.S. Air Force Academy’s iGEM team recently secured a gold medal at the Genetic Engineering Machine Grand Jamboree, marking their second win in four years. This global competition challenges high school and university students to merge biology with engineering, fostering innovation in synthetic biology.

FDA Has Not Approved Any Home Tests for Lyme Disease

MassLive (Jochem, G.) 10.06.2023, published “Western Massachusetts woman files lawsuit over home test for Lyme disease.” A lawsuit has been filed in Springfield’s U.S. District Court against LetsGetChecked, a company providing a home test for Lyme disease. Moira Kerans from Dalton and TruthCures, a nonprofit focused on Lyme disease, are the plaintiffs seeking $5 million in damages. They allege that the test is inaccurate, deceives customers, and violates consumer protection laws. Read more.

Pfizer Completes Enrollment for Phase 3 of Lyme Vaccine

Over 9,400 Volunteers Are Enrolled

Industry Dive (Alvarado, D.) 12.05.2023, published “Pfizer, after delay, completes enrollment in Lyme vaccine trial.” Pfizer and Valneva completed enrollment for a Phase 3 trial of their Lyme disease vaccine, ending a delay sparked by concerns about trial misconduct. The FDA found no wrongdoing, but the study’s completion is pushed back to 2025. Read more.

Prevention Methods Are Crucial

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (Hayes, J.) 12.03.2023, published “Reproductive anomaly enables a tick species to race into Pennsylvania.” The Asian longhorned tick, a parasite from Southeast Asia, is posing a significant threat to livestock, wildlife, and pets across 19 states, including Pennsylvania. This invasive species, known for reproducing asexually, has rapidly spread since its arrival in the United States in 2017 and has been confirmed in numerous Pennsylvania counties and city parks. New Study Explores U2AF2 and PRPF19

The Journal of Clinical Investigation (Li, D., et al.) 11.14.2023, published “Spliceosome malfunction causes neurodevelopmental disorders with overlapping features.” The article discusses neurodevelopmental disorders arise during childhood (NDDs), a diverse group including autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability. Over 1,500 genes linked to these conditions have been identified, notably those regulating gene expression and chromatin structure. Despite progress in genetic diagnoses, understanding how these genes interact and cause neurodevelopmental impairments remains a challenge. Read more.

Cowleys Pest Services, NJ, The Pesty News, Winter 2023 newsletter, alerts people that live Christmas trees can bring pests into a home, including ticks. Their suggestions: Before bringing tree into home, shake it, then pick it up off ground a few inches and tap it down firmly. Inspect tree with flashlight. Look for pests and egg sacks.
