Angel Hawks Do It Again -- Step Up for Our Hawks!

Hudson Catholic Finishes Strong, financially

Challenge Match, Securities Donations, Class Gifts, Alumni Association Tide School through year-end

Because Hudson Catholic as an institution has no aid to give to students and their families in the month of June, because it has all been allotted by then, we face our biggest challenge to enable students to complete their exams and school years, and look forward to returning to the student body in the next grade level in September. For a number of families, that outcome is not assured when, after receiving ample aid for the year, they remain unable to meet their tuition obligations due to a variety of hardships that befall them during the year.

This is where our Angel Hawks come to the rescue. The Alumni Association has been doing this for years, delivering $15,000 annually late in the year, to the benefit of 6 to 12 Hawks. And certain alumni, some anonymously, answer the call when asked, and are happy to rescue a family in such need, whether due to parental illness or loss, job loss, or other conditions that arise as barriers to fulfilling their financial commitments.

Gerry McGraw '72 offered up a Year End Challenge Match worth $40,000, and Hawks and friends responded with gifts totaling $30,520. Three Hawk gifts of securities brought in $51,000, and two Class Gifts delivered another $22,000. As a result, while we fell short of our goal of $400,000 for The Fund For Hudson Catholic this year, together we did produce a record total in that regard, topping last year's record total of $364,924 by 3.7% with a total of $378,291.

The Home of The Hawks is sending a great big shout-out to all who supported Hudson Catholic in myriad ways this month and throughout the past school year!

Class of '74 Gift Presented to School

Three members of the Class of '74 - David Carbone, Brian Altano, Peter Morales - traveled to the Hawk campus last week to present President-Principal Terry Matthews with their Class Gift of $12,000 in commemoration of their 50 Year Reunion held last October at the Hawks Nest. They, like all of us at Hudson Catholic, are appreciative of all the class members who donated to this class gift.

At the presentation, the class reps indicated their intention for the gift, that it be added to the Brother Patrick King, FSC Tribute Fund. Consequently, this gift lifts the lid on the campaign to raise money to commission a statue or bust of our beloved late Christian Brother, which is planned for installation in the the courtyard, to be named 'King's Courtyard'.

We have a distance to go yet, in fundraising, then the creation and installation, but we are well on the way of our journey, and the Hudson Catholic community will be hearing more about this in the coming months.

Having just delivered a fat check to the Prez, members of the Class of '74, David Carbone, Brian Altano and Peter Morales (all friends since their St. Paul of the Cross years) flank President-Principal Terry Matthews and flash their grins during their visit back to the site of their glory days.

Securities Donations Working for Hawks

The recent provision of facilities to enable Hawks and friends to make donations of securities to Hudson Catholic has been received with enthusiasm, and it now gives the school yet another avenue in which our supporters can choose the manner in which they would prefer to demonstrate that support.

Within the first month of availing instructions for enacting such donations from donors' brokerage accounts to Hudson Catholic, The Home of The Hawks has been the grateful recipient of three such gifts, each for a different purpos. Recent Hall of Fame Inductee Bill Cullen '72 enacted his gift match for the Day of Giving Challenge, and to fund the St. John's Fund to assist Hawks intending to further their studies at the SJU Maurice Greenberg School of Risk Management. Mike Kahrer '75 made his gift of securities to serve as a Match Challenge in funding the first gift to the planned 1975 Class Gift as part of the class's upcoming 50 Year Reunion celebration. And Mike Lubanski '90 made a direct gift to The Fund for Hudson Catholic with the intent to help the community in response to Gerry McGraw '72's 'Year End Match Challenge'.

These gifts featured shares of Nvidia, Apple and Microsoft -- stocks among the most highly traded, for companies at the highest market capitalization. These stocks have appreciated greatly in a relative short period of time, producing capital gains that are non-taxable in charitable gifts, consequently can greatly benefit our school as much as the donors who will avoid taxable events and create tax deductions at the same time. In which case, this manner of donating can and should entice more Hawks to consider supporting Hudson Catholic with before-tax gifts.

Gift Securities to Hudson Catholic

Meet The Prez

The summer months are here, which means that the pace of the campus slows down without the student body traversing the halls, but administering to the campus remains apace. Fridays are off, but the Administration shifts its focus to preparing the facilities and programs for readiness come the first week of September.

To less-than-frantic pace of the hallways in these next 60 days are ideal for visits to the Nest, particularly for meeting with President Terry Matthews, who looks forward to having the uninterrupted time to greet alumni and friends, and welcome those who may not have returned since their graduation day.

Come on back, we’d love to show you what we have done with the place. You might be surprised by how we have preserved the facilities to the point of nostalgia.

Do you need a reason to make the ‘commute’ to McGinley Square? Perhaps you are returning to New Jersey from out of state and may not have another foreseeable opportunity? Or as a supporter, you try to keep up with school happenings in Building The Legacy and want to hear more detail, first-hand, about what is going on? Or simply for an exchange of ideas? Or perhaps to plan your next gift for where it may be needed the most? All good reasons to make the trip.

Simply drop a note to the Chief Advancement Officer, Gary Ferrari, at advancement@hudsoncatholic.org, containing your desired date to visit in July or August, and we'll make the arrangements and confirm back to you. We’ll ready the red carpet for rollout at the Mercer Street entrance on your planned date of visitation.

Look Who Stopped By!

Miguel 'Mike' Alvarez '79, all the way from Encino, CA, was in North Jersey, and dropped in on Terry Matthews. Mike's last time on campus was in June 2004 for his class's 25th Reunion.

Message From The President,

-- Terry Mathews

The summer has begun but there is truly no summer vacation in a high school. Even as we close the 2024-2025 school year, we are working feverishly to prepare for the 2025-2026 year. It’s the never-ending cycle of education!

I first want to thank everyone who has offered their support this past year. Hudson Catholic is able to continuously provide a quality Catholic education with a full slate of academic and extracurricular offerings because of all of our alums, friends and families who provide aid and resources. I know people want to see the results of their efforts and I take great pride in being able to provide them!

On May 31st, we graduated 123 seniors from St. Aedan’s Church. Our Valedictorian is heading to the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, while our Salutatorian will be attending NJIT on a full-ride. As always, we had a 100% college acceptance rate!

In what will become an annual tradition, three Hawk alums handed their sons diplomas at Graduation. Walter Chowanec ’90 to Craig Chowanec; Javier Garcia ’93 to Javier Garcia Jr.; and Shawn Wilson ’83 to Jude Wilson.

We currently have 136 registered freshmen for the Class of 2029.

We are bringing another person on board in our Advancement Office to concentrate on some organizational best practices, as well as focus specifically on cultivation within our classes from the 1980’s and 1990’s.

We have added another person to work in our Business Office, which will give us someone to focus solely on day-to-day operations, check writing, benefits and payroll, among general duties.

We have hired Justin Gonzalez, previously at Immaculate Conception, to replace Jaime de Leon as our Director of Enrollment Management & Admissions. It was important to find someone that had prior high school recruiting experience, preferably focused on our school’s demographics, and who had SFIC and SPA relationships, if possible.

We have brought on MaryBeth Landis as a Math teacher. MaryBeth has extensive Catholic and Public School experience and is a Highly Effective Math teacher. Recently retired, she has also gone through the NJBOE’s Teacher Mentorship training, which will be extremely helpful as she will create a mentorship program for our new teachers.

Three of our students have been accepted to the NY/NJ Port Authority Police summer program.

Three of our students will be attending NASA’s Space Camp this summer.

The Boys Volleyball team captured the Group 1 South State Championship for the first time in school history. Head Coach, Fernando Colon, was named Coach of the Year and Alan Santiago became the first male Hawk Volleyball player to earn 1st Team All-State accolades.

The Girls Track & Field team had a tremendous weekend at the NJSIAA Non-Public B State Championship Meet, finishing in 4th place despite having no seniors as we were graduating that Saturday. The 4 x 100m relay are State Champions as they placed first, breaking the school record in the process with a time of :50.34 seconds. The team consisted of Juniors Faith Eatman (daughter of Cleveland Eatman ‘82”), Breanna Miller and Kimora Sims, and Freshman Maliah Duru.

Junior Breanna Miller had an incredible meet as, in addition to being part of the winning relay, she placed 1st in the 100m sprint with a time of :12.15, breaking the school and Hudson County record in the process. As if that wasn’t enough, she placed 1st in the 200m sprint with a time of :25.88, beating her nearest competitor by almost a full second, and won the High Jump, too! That’s correct, Breanna is a State Champion in FOUR different events!

By the end of the high school sports seasons, 23 Hudson Catholic seniors had announced they will be continuing their academic and athletic careers on the collegiate levels.

June Brings Retirements

Brother Tim Ahern & Bishop Gregory Studerus

Brother Tim Ahern, FSC has retired after completing 55 years delivering the Lasallian mission of education - in teaching and administration. Fifteen of those years were spent serving the students of Hudson Catholic. His first tour of duty in Jersey City comprised faculty and coaching assignments, from 1979 to 1988. His second tour of duty saw his return to McGinley Square as Head of School, for five years, from 1999 to 2005. We owe him a huge debt of gratitude for all the lives he touched in our community. As a result, he is one of the most beloved Christian Brothers to ever step on to our campus and become a ‘Jersey City guy’.

Brother Tim spent the last 13 years of his service teaching at Christian Brothers Academy and plans on retiring to the FSC community right there on the Lincroft campus. Hard to believe that our version of Dick Clark will celebrate his 60th anniversary as a De La Salle brother in 2026. Stay tuned.

Share your memories of, and salutes to, Brother Tim Ahern at advancement@hudsoncatholic.org and we will publish them in the next issue of 'BTL'.

Bishop Gregory Studerus has served unofficially as Hudson Catholic's Spiritual Leader for the past four years while in residence on the Hudson Catholic campus as the official Vicar of Hudson County. Consequently, he will be greatly missed as he retires from active service this month.

Hudson Catholic has been truly blessed to have had Bishop Studerus on campus As a consequence of carrying out his liturgical leadership in Hudson County from McGinley Square, his proximity has enabled him to provide pastoral services for the practice of our faith, e.g., celebrations of Mass (weekly; the Baccalaureate, the annual Alumni Mass of Remembrance), the Sacrament of Confirmation, School Liturgies, and Event Blessings.

We thank Bishop Studerus for his unwavering dedication and his deep concern for the spiritual well-being of everyone at Hudson Catholic. May God bless him in his retirement.

Along With a Departure

-- Long Time Basketball Coach & Athletic Director,

Nick Mariniello

Just before we went to publication, President-Principal Terry Matthews announced Nick Mariniello's departure to the Hudson Catholic family, following 15 years of service as Boys Basketball Coach and Athletic Director. His destination: Director of Athletics at Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) in Lincroft, NJ. Terry thanked Nick for his years of dedication to our school; for his stewardship of our Athletic Programs; for his dedication to our student-athletes, especially throughout their college processes; for the achievements of our Boys Basketball teams; and for his commitment to Hudson Catholic.

In turn, Nick issued the following statement: "I am extremely grateful and humbled by how the members of the Hudson Catholic Community accepted and gave me a home 15 years ago. I am proud that I was part of the renaissance and rebirth of an institution that continues to empower a community. I would like to thank my former and current Administrators and colleagues who challenged me to elevate my game. I want to thank the student-athletes who have helped maintain a standard of academic and athletic excellence. Most of all, I want to thank my former and current players and their families for trusting me with being their Coach. I am a better person, a better coach and a better man because of Hudson Catholic."

We wish Coach Mariniello success in his new endeavor. The search to replace him in both roles began immediately. Terry has committed to keeping our stakeholders informed as we move rapidly, but thoughtfully, through the process.

Hawk Happenings

One More for the Gym Banners

For four seniors on the Boys Volleyball Team, they helped to bring home the school’s latest State Sectional Championship Title (Group 1) a few days following their graduation! A pretty nice encore. They defeated St. John Vianney in Holmdel, 2-0 (25-21, 25-22) to win the school’s first Boys Volleyball sectional championship, which happens to be the first title of any kind that Hudson has eared in this sport. Congratulations to Coach Fernando Colon and all of our Hawk players.

Post-script: The Hawks put up a great fight but fell just short to West Caldwell Tech, 25-20 & 27-25 in the State Championship match only a few days later.

State Laurels for Girls Track, and One Girl in Particular

Our 4x100m Girls Relay Team emerged as State Champion and broke the School Record with a time of 0:50.34. Team members are Juniors Faith Eatman, Breanna Miller, Kimora Sims, and Freshman Maliah Duru. 2026 looks brighter still!

Breanna Miller added 1st Place Individual medals in the 100m Sprint with a time of 0:12.15, breaking the School and Hudson County Records; in the 200m Sprint with a time of 0:25.88, beating her nearest competitor by almost a full second; and, the High Jump, making Brianna a FOUR-EVENT State Champion, making her the most decorated runner in Girls and School State Track history!

College Acceptances are Far, Wide, Plentiful

The below graphics represent a sample of the total college and university acceptances compiled by our high-achieving Class of '25.

Tuition Savings for Dual Degree Grads is Monumental

Our recent Dual Degree Grads -- Hudson Catholic AND St. Peter's University Associate degrees -- 22 of them, compiled some significant college tuition savings for themselves as a result of all their hard work put into their sophomore through senior years 'attending' SPU courses on both campuses. Each grad earned 60 college credits.

At $595 per credit, net of the comparatively nominal additional cost for these courses in addition to their tuition obligations at Hudson Catholic, each student realized savings of $30,475! That amounts to a combined savings of $670,450 for this 5th Cohort alone. Including follow-on scholarship and discounts for continued studies at St. Pete's, those savings rise to $744,500.

When these savings are added to the first four cohorts in the Dual Degree Program, cumulative savings generated by this exclusive Hudson Catholic college program (administered by Ms. Erin Drennan and instituted by Mr. William Venezia '70 (ret.) amounts to nearly $7,000,000!

Our Catholicity on Display

One week following our graduation activities, five underclassmen, members of Hudson Catholic's RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Program, having been guided through a journey of faith that culminates in the reception of the sacraments of Baptism, the Eucharist, and Confirmation, were confirmed by Bishop Gregory Studerus. The students had undergone weekly classes after school and participated in a retreat as part of the program overseen by Ms. Maria Maderal and Mr. Archie Mabini of Faculty. And two of our Hawks chose Mr. Mabini and Mr. Frank McGady, also Faculty, as their Confirmation Sponsors. Our Hawks were part of an overall group comprising 21 others from among St. Dominic Academy, St. Peter's Prep, and St. Aedan's Parish.

Congratulations to The Student/Partner Alliance, too!

Fourteen members of the Class of 2025 have been supported over their high school years by the sponsors and mentors of the Student/Partner Alliance, an organization that has been supporting Hudson Catholic Hawks in this fashion for six years. So, as the S/PA congratulates our grads for a job well done, it is our turn to congratulate the Student/Partner Alliance for another year of their job well done and continuing to earn our unending gratitude for their support of the students entrusted to our care in the delivery of our Lasallian mission of service to others.

Blasts From the Past

’69 Baccalaureate Mass. From Bob Stroebel ’69, who should know – he was there --the Class of ‘69 had its Baccalaureate Mass at St. Paul of the Cross, with the understanding that the School was going to rotate it around the different grammar schools that sent students to HC, starting with St. Paul of the Cross, which was his Parish.

Bob’s recollection is that this initiative arose following the 1968 Baccalaureate Mass at St. Aedan’s, with St. Paul of the Cross following in 1969 because of the relationship of Pastors Robert Duffy and Francis Hennessy, respectively, who both came from St. Aedan’s.

On a personal note, Bob fractured his ankle on the senior class trip and had to graduate on crutches, but hobbled up and down the aisle at his ‘home’ church.

From the Mass, a photo featuring the Hawk Music Club, L-R: Rich Bourgoin '69 (RIP), Vin Tomassi '70, Tom Zafian ‘69, Steve Liptak ‘69 and Mr. Matt Hagovsky, Music Teacher.

A Hawk tradition is to arrange class members in the shape of the year of their graduation, in the Courtyard. How the photo is nabbed is anybody's guess. In this case, the Millennium Class is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, so let this serve as a reminder that you should be organizing for a reunion at The Home of The Hawks.
