Welcome to summer!

This week marks the end of another school year. Even as students, teachers and staff wind down, the School Committee has been busy with a variety of initiatives. This newsletter offers an update on: rebuilding the Hillside School, renovating  Needham High School and full-day kindergarten -- among other items.

As we head into vacation, CNS thanks the Needham Public Schools, teachers, administrators and support staff for another successful school year. We wish you an enjoyable summer!

Full-Day Kindergarten Update
"A milestone moment" - School Committee Vice-Chairman, Heidi Black

On June 7th, the school committee voted to officially recommend compulsory, publicly funded Full Day Kindergarten.  The administration will offer options for implementation and a suggested timeline in Fall of 2016.  For more information visit the Full Day Kindergarten Report.
High School Renovation and Hillside Rebuilding Updates

Needham High

If you've driven along Webster Ave this spring, you've likely seen the expansion work on the High School's cafeteria.  In November 2015, a Special Town Meeting approved $2.1 million dollars to expand the cafeteria which was built for 1,450 students but serving 1,666.  The project should be completed in time for the start of school on August 31st.

The district and town are also studying classroom space at Needham High. In May, Town Meeting approved $65,000 in funding to study space needs at the high school.

Hillside Elementary

Plans for the new Hillside school are also moving forward.  In Oct 2015, Special Town Meeting approved the purchase of Owen's Poultry Farm, on Central Ave, as the new site for Hillside school. On June 2nd, the town submitted the preferred schematic design to the MBSA (Massachusetts State Building Authority).  The MSBA reimburses towns a portion of the eligible costs of building new schools.  The schematic is under review and this project is slated to be completed by Fall of 2020.

For more information about this project, visit the   Hillside School Planning Information Page.

Town Meeting Update

Last month, Town Meeting approved the Town of Needham's operating budget for the fiscal year starting July 1st.  This budget includes $65.95 million for the Needham Public Schools, a 6.03% increase over the previous budget.  Town Meeting also approved $65,000 to fund a study of space constraints at Needham High School.

CNS Transitions

CNS offers a warm thank you to Jenny Solomon and Alison Rivers. Both are stepping down this year.  Their dedication and inspiration will be missed! Sally Theran will be joining the CNS board. We look forward to working with Sally in the coming year!
