Home is where the heart is. It is also where we’ve spent more time than we ever imagined this year. Home is where we’re working and where our kids are learning. It’s where we gather with family and friends – virtually. For those of us fortunate enough to have room for at-home offices and classrooms, enough band width for multiple users, and a safe neighborhood for a daily walk, sheltering at home has been inconvenient, but not impossible. As we head into a holiday season likely to be without the same togetherness and sharing of traditions, we remain grateful for our comfortable homes.
For McLean County families who are already struggling, this year has been even more difficult. The daily uphill battle of providing affordable housing where their kids will be safe, is compounded by the stress of fitting work and school spaces into an already cramped 1-bedroom apartment. Many are essential workers, adding the fear of catching a deadly virus to everything else on their shoulders. They are spending most of their income just to put a roof over their children’s heads, with no extra for holiday foods or trimmings.
Everyone deserves a safe, decent, and affordable home of their own. Our mission at Habitat McLean County is to partner with local families to make that a reality.
You can empower a family this holiday season with your year-end gift. Your gift helps build a home, but more importantly, it creates a foundation on which a hard-working family will build a better future. It offers hope and dignity to one of your neighbors. On behalf of our current homeowners and those to come, thank you for your generosity and for continuing to build brighter futures and a stronger community. May your holiday season be safe and warm and full of blessings!
