CLEARING THE 'CLEAR ZONE'

The Department of Defense has agreed to spend $80 million to relocate and demolish a number of businesses that the military worries are too close to McChord Airfield.

Called the ‘Clear Zone,’ the portion of land just north of McChord Airfield has seen development encroachment in an area where almost a third of all crashes happen.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE DISPUTES IMPACT LOCALLY
International trade disputes are hurting local businesses and the job sector. Tacoma-based Northwest Hardwoods had to halt production and issue warning notices to 66 employees due to the U.S.-China trade dispute.

Other industry that are affected -- agriculture, cabinetmaking, and much more.

NEW CHAPTER FOR COLUMBIA BANK
Columbia Banking System recently announced that Hadley Robbins, president and CEO, will retire Dec. 31 after nearly seven years of service with the company and nearly 40 years in banking.

Succeeding Robbins as CEO is  Clint Stein , Columbia’s current COO. Stein, a Chamber board member, will take the reins on Jan. 1, 2020.

The Consular Association Reception (CAR) is an annual event the World Affairs Council of Tacoma hosts in honor of members of the Washington Consular Association, individuals who serve their home country's interests and further global development across Washington.

BUSINESS COMMUNITY HEARS FROM TACOMA CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATES
Last Friday, the Chamber hosted the Candidates Forum luncheon featuring all Tacoma City Council candidates. Attendees heard from candidates about how they would tackle homelessness, their stance on ballot measures and initiatives, and how they would improve their districts.
