included a short video demonstration of the basic heat treatment of O1 tool steel. If you have tried it yourself, I’m curious how it went.

Yes, that is a Hock Tools VK025, a 1/4-inch violin knife.

Loveland Violin Shop's Mick Loveland makes the bridge for The Redwood Violin from locally sourced madrone, and chats with violinmaker and project dreamer Andrew Carruthers about a life with violins.

Once Andrew and Mick complete their video chat, and the bridge is in place, we hear Terrie Baune play The Redwood Violin!

You may recall from another newsletter that Sonoma County-based violinmaker Andrew Carruthers developed The Redwood Violin project to paint a portrait of the county in which he lives and works, as told through the making of a violin solely from locally sourced materials.

The Redwood Violin is a project that celebrates where people live, work, play and create community. It is inspired and introduces us to limitless possibilities for our own hometowns and counties.

Now, after months, The Redwood Violin project is moving into its second phase. The first was "made local," the second is "played local."

The time has come for The Redwood Violin to be played in all styles and levels of music by all sorts of musicians in Sonoma County. Videos of these performances will be posted; so, you might consider keeping up online with The Redwood Violin.

"Just to let you know your scraper blade for the Stanley #80 that I recently purchased really made the thing sing!! I wound up using only the scraper to finish the top of my Cherry tabletop, not a bit of sandpaper. I am convinced that scrapers and planes are the way to go and am dropping setting up my old jointer to the bottom of the shop to-do list.

I also picked up a Stanly #7 jointer off eBay, which didn’t have a blade. No problem, since I’m putting my order in tonight.

Here is a photo of the cherry tabletop. I am very pleased!! The tile in the middle was made by my 9-year-old grandson. His Dad, my son, is a great wood-fired potter, yet I prefer my Grandson’s tile to his Dad's!"
