 Welcome to 2018! Here's what KlezCalifornia is planning for you:
* Once again, we plan to present exciting all-new
Cabarets by the Bay in the Fall, venues TBD, to build on our successes in 2017 at the JCCs in Los Gatos and in Berkeley.
* We're scheduling this year's fun and challenging
Klezmer Workshops & Jams, building on the monthly events we put on in 2017 in Berkeley, San Francisco, and Palo Alto. We'll announce them in this newsletter but give more details to those on a special list. Contact us at

* Our
Yiddish Conversation Salons for fluent Yiddish speakers have proven successful as more frequent monthly events and have been well-attended and much enjoyed by all! They will continue to be coordinated by Evie Groch and Rosie Kaplan. You may join the mailing list by writing

Tam: Tastes of Yiddish Culture for Kids & Teens is going full-speed ahead. We are planning
fifty presentations this school year to religious schools and day schools in the Bay Area and spreading the lesson plans to other communities in the U.S. and Canada. Our workshop in December at Yiddish New York (YNY) went well. Listen to a
19-minute interview about Tam with KlezCalifornia executive director Judy Kunofsky. You may see all 26 lessons at

Some of you have requested Yiddish sing-alongs and dance parties. Let us know if you have time to work with us to put these together!

"The Lonely Child"

 The Lonely Child
: A Look at a Song and a Documentary-in-Progress
, presented by Alix Wall
Thursday, January 25, 7pm.
"The Lonely Child" is a Yiddish song written in 1943 in the Vilna Ghetto by poet Shmerke Kaczerginski about a mother and daughter separated by war. Seventy-five
years later, Alix Wall, daughter of the daughter in the song, has set out to make a documentary film about those keeping the song alive, working with filmmaker Marc Smolowitz, the son of a child hidden from the Nazis. While the film is in its early stages, Wall will speak about the power of the song and its global footprint.

Yiddish Classes beginning January and February

 Beginning Yiddish, with Yankl Levitow. Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:30-5:20pm, beginning January 8. Stanford University course, but auditors welcome.
Intermediate Yiddish, with Yankl Levitow. Tuesdays 7-9pm, beginning January 9. Congregation Kol Tefilah, Santa Cruz.
Tuition $300 (no one turned away for lack of funds). All are welcome, but students in this class can already read, write, and converse in Yiddish. Each week consists of some conversation and consideration of a grammatical topic.
Possible Intermediate Yiddish in the South Bay, with Yankl Levitow. Wednesdays, 7-9pm. Dates and place TBD. For students who can read and speak in simple sentences in present tense along with "modal" verbs (to want, to be able, to need or have to).

The Bay Area-based klezmer trio
Veretski Pass (Cookie Segelstein, Joshua Horowitz, Stuart Brotman) has been awarded a grant from the Alliance for California Traditional Arts (A.C.T.A.) for a new project to perform tunes collected by Sofia Magid, the Jewish ethnographer who recorded Jewish music in Ukraine during Stalin's regime in the 1920s and '30s. Magid's six hundred recordings have been untouched since they were created, and include rare examples of women's themes. Veretski Pass will clean, decipher, and transcribe the cylinders, perform and record a selection of the music, and then teach the tunes to workshop students. We look forward to hearing the results of this exciting project!
