BLACK HISTORY MONTH edition

My dear Kinship Community,

The theme for BHM 2022? Black Health and Wellness. Take a minute to breathe that in. What does Black Health and Wellness mean to you, as a member of the community, as an ally? What does it mean to your state, your society, your system?

I pondered this question myself - and then it hit me. Armour

All too often, Black Health and Wellness is about being armed. It's about suiting up to protect yourself against a criminal justice system where 1 in 3 black boys can expect to go to prison in their lifetime. A healthcare system where the BIPOC community persistently experience lower standards of care and have a lower life expectancy. An educational system that is institutionally unequal creating significant disparities in access, resources and opportunities for our children. And a supremacist system that literally has the power to take our breath away.

Our instinct, our survival response, tells us to fight but I challenge you to down tools. Momentarily disarm yourself, create safe spaces to nurture, heal and repair. I invite you to extend those spaces to those that require them and create networks and partnerships that allow you/us to rebuild.

It is imperative to protect your mental and physical health through intentional practice that serves your soul and grants you the energy to move forward. In the words of Audre Lorde, 'caring for myself is not self-indulgence. It is self-preservation, and that is an act of physical warfare.'

Wishing you wellness,

Dee x

ItAll Podcast

Last week, I recorded my first ever podcast with the women over at IT ALL Media - a home for the new stories that define us, and the conversations women want to have. Their show, the F*ck "It All" podcast, is an exploration, conversation and love letter to the brave women who are saying fuck “it all."

I asked myself what was your ‘fuck it all moment' and are you really good enough to be pursuing this dream? The answer - yes, I am - and so are you.

The podcast will go live in February. Follow the awesome Kacie and Katie on IG @itallpodcast.

Wellness Focus

Radical Self Care

So, what do we mean by Radical Self Care? Well, self care in western cultures often describes isolated, indulgent and often expensive treatments that can sometimes feel exclusive and out of reach for many of us. Don’t get me wrong, I'm not rejecting the idea of a great massage or day at the spa; these too serve their purpose. But radical self care goes way beyond that.

The term that was popularized by the Black Panther Party in the 60’s and 70’s to raise awareness of the stark health inequities of black and other marginalized groups. Through this movement, dedicated initiatives were developed to bring wellness programs to the underserved. Radical self care is about self love, self healing and moving beyond personal trauma. However, the ultimate goal is to create a healthy collective consciousness, a community of warriors who are in the strongest position to enact change.
