Anatomy 101 and 201 are Required to be completed for your 300 hour certification and as part of your Yoga Therapy Training. Please be sure to complete these modules in the 300 hour online coursework. Additional Pathology and Anatomy will be learned in Yoga Therapy that builds on this foundation.

ASSESSMENTS 101 & 102
HOMEWORK
The first assignment you will want to complete is your intake form. Please read the book: Postural Assessment, by Jane Johnson and:

  1. Complete the 6 quizzes at the end of each chapter. Submit via email to Heartwood
  2. Create your original intake form addressing the panchamaya Kosha model. Submit via email to Heartwood
  3. Collect completed intake forms and practice an intake interview from 3 clients (not family members). Include with your completed forms a 1 page paper per client on how the interview was structured and received and any observations or questions that arose during this session.
** YOUR INTAKE FORM MUST BE APPROVED BEFORE YOU CAN BEGIN YOUR PRACTICUM. YOU MUST USE THIS INTAKE FORM WITH YOUR PRACTICUM CLIENTS.
Death & Dying Unit
  1. Read the book Being with Dying: Cultivating Compassion and Fearlessness in the Prescence of Death by Joan Halifax

2.Dying Meditation Practicum
Pick one of the meditations included in your manual, or select one offered in any of the required reading. Choose one that is appropriate to the life situation of the person you will be working with. Meet with a willing participant, set up a private session, and guide them through the meditation. Have a discussion with the client, both before and after the session. Explain the meditation and how it is valuable before you begin. Fill out the self-evaluation form here.

  1. Read the book Being Mortal by Atul Gawande

2.Pick 6 of the contemplative essay questions and answer them with a few paragraphs of thought for each.
Buddhism Unit
Read What the Buddha Taught by Walpola Rahula
Additional recommended reading: The Heart of Buddhas Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh

-Exercise 1: Work with the following 3 of the teachings/ stories provided int he back of the book- pages 9-138
  1. Getting Rid of All Cares and Troubles (Sabbasva-suttra)
  2. The Foundations of Mindfulness (Satipatthana- suttra)
  3. Advice to Sigal (Sigalovada-suttra)
After contemplation on this wisdom and how it was shared, write a page on each that explains how you might use these teachings in a yoga therapy session to help a clients heal emotionally or mentally. Describe your interpretation of the teaching and what circumstances might make sharing this wisdom helpful. You may wish to compare the teachings to one or more of our Patanjali yoga sutras to explore similarities or differences.

-Exercise 2: Write a 500-800 word paper on how Buddhism studies may support and/pr enhance your work as a yoga therapist. You may wish to discuss who will the essence of this philosophy work for, how would you introduce it, and any other inspiration or consideration you feel after reading What the Buddha Taught.

  1. Read about the Integrative Cancer Therapy case studies in the article: The Experience of Indigenous Traditional Healing and Cancer - a study by Roxanne Struthers

2.Write a 2-5 page paper on how thee cases are viewed in a Koshic context and might be insightful takeaways for yoga therapists. Pick three or four lines or passages from the testimonial of the clients that reinforce the potential or a spiritual approach to healing (in combination with, or instead of) formal western treatments as empowerment and support for the client's cancer experience. How does the description of Indigenous Healing transfer to the practices we introduce in yoga therapy? What practices might we employ that will be embraced in our culture and society that can have the same healing influence on the mind, body, or soul?
Ceremony as an Act of Healing Unit

  1. Create a ceremony of a healing nature for a client.
Use your creativity to design an event which will foster relief from suffering, be it attachments, lack of faith or confidence, a life transition, or difficulty accepting a situation. Plan and perform the ceremony for the client, and then answer the assessment provided to you in your manual.
