"Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you."

- Anne Lamott -

How do we stay calm and steady, connected to our sense of self, when it seems like our world is in chaos? As yogis, we have the tools to energize, balance, and strengthen our nervous and glandular systems so that we can respond to life with consciousness—not react to life with anxiety, fear and worry. The practice of Kundalini Yoga creates an internal biochemistry of mental calm and clarity.

This issue of Yogic Living offers resources to alleviate excessive worry, incessant mental chatter, and persistent anxious thoughts. Meditate to calm the mind and open into a profound stillness.

Meditation for a Calm Heart

ky_-_med_for_calm_heart_1.jpeg

This soothing breath practice (pranayama) relieves anxiety and promotes calmness and mental clarity.

Posture: Sit in an Easy Pose, with a light Jalandhar bandh. Place the left hand on the center of the chest at the Heart Center. The palm is flat against the chest, and the fingers are parallel to the ground, pointing to the right.

Make Gyan Mudra with the right hand. Raise the right hand up to the right side as if giving a pledge. The palm faces forward, the three fingers not in Gyan Mudra point up. The elbow is relaxed near the side with the forearm perpendicular to the ground.

Movement Relaxation Series

Movement Relaxation.png

This is a beautiful movement meditation that will assist in the relaxation of your body and mind. It is important for us to deeply relax on a daily basis. Stress which builds up can cause physical and mental imbalances and this short yoga set is a beautiful way to release tension in the mind and body.

Rhythmic, unforced, graceful, and free movement relaxes the entire body and releases the tensions we store in the body from our daily emotions. Emotional traumas leave their signature of tension in the body, which needs to be released. Feeling the entire body confirms the reality of the relaxation and smooths the aura.

This is delicious comfort food on a cold, winter’s night. Top a hot, steaming bowl of chili with grated cheese, a dollop of sour cream, and chopped red onions! Add a large handful of Tortilla Chips or a few slices of skillet cornbread. Get comfy on the couch and find the remote! Ahhhhhhh!
