A Caboose for Yorba Linda

Office Manager, Beverly Pool inspects available cabooses in Mira Loma. | |

A Caboose for Yorba Linda
A News Tribune article givens insight as to how
MJB Realty owner, Jerry Kolb, obtained a caboose.
__________________________
Kolb said that the idea began as a gimmick. “We thought we could use it as a trademark and the idea worked.”
Kolb had long wanted a railroad car to complement his office in Yorba Linda's Pacific Electric Depot, but he found the acquisition difficult. Union Pacific stated that there were 28 cabooses available and he was number 105 on the waiting list. MJB Realty Office Manager, Beverly Pool, said that their office also contacted Santa Fe and Southern Pacific to no avail.
In 1972, after one particularly trying day of being rejected by railroad companies, Kolb said he left work with renewed determination. "I went to bed thinking, how am I going to get that caboose? When I woke up the next morning, I had it!”
Kolb felt that a Yorba Linda Historical Society needed to be formed. Following the formation, he was named president and the society's first project was to acquire a caboose. The goal was to open a President Nixon Mini-Museum in the caboose, which seemed only fitting since our city was the birthplace of the nation’s 37th president. Kolb immediately sent a letter to Union Pacific requesting a caboose.
Two days later, he received a phone call from Union Pacific Omaha telling him that he could have his pick of their 28 cabooses, circa 1950, located in Mira Loma. Following the purchase of the caboose, Union Pacific agreed to provide paint, emblems, hardware and any other needed equipment to bring the caboose up to its original appearance.
A caboose was coming to Yorba Linda and the excitement began to build!

Just in Time for Memorial Day!
"This isn't only about restoring a landmark.. it's also about sparking conversations with your kids. To talk about the many sacrifices made for our freedom and why we should all be grateful to live in this great country ..So, if you're going down the freeway, tell you kids to put their phone down and LOOK and have those conversations because it's a lost generation that needs to appreciate this."

Just in Time for Memorial Day!
Opinion
Just in time for Memorial Day, the 1976 bicentennial mural on the Corona Yorba Linda area Prado Dam has finally been repainted after years of controversy. As a real estate agent, I have to say that this is one of the most exciting things to happen in our region's history. Okay, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but let's face it, this mural is a landmark that we all grew up with and it's about time that it got some much-needed TLC.
Now, I know what you're thinking, "Why is a real estate agent getting all worked up about a mural?" Well, my dear friends, the answer is simple. As real estate agents, we are not just selling homes, we are selling a lifestyle. And what better way to sell the lifestyle of Southern California than by showcasing one of our most iconic landmarks?
For those of you who have never driven on the 91 freeway from Orange County to Riverside County, let me paint you a picture. You're cruising down the freeway, enjoying the beautiful California sunshine, when suddenly you see it. The bicentennial freedom mural at Prado Dam. It's huge, it's patriotic, and it's a reminder of everything that makes America great.
Now, I'll be the first to admit that over the years, the mural has lost its luster. It's suffered from weathering and graffiti, and it's been the subject of much controversy. But thanks to a fundraising effort by the Bicentennial Freedom Mural Conservancy and the Friends of the Prado Dam Mural, the mural has been restored to its former glory.
And let me tell you, it's a sight to behold. As an artist myself, I can't even imagine the amount of time and effort that went into recreating this masterpiece. But the end result is truly breathtaking. The colors are vibrant, the message is clear, and it's sure to be a source of inspiration for generations to come.
So, why should you care about the Prado Dam Bicentennial Mural? Well, for starters, it's a symbol of our region's history and resilience. It represents everything that makes our community great, from our patriotism to our creativity. And as real estate agents, we couldn't be prouder to call this landmark our own.
But don't just take my word for it. Take a drive down the 91 freeway and see for yourself. And while you're at it, take a moment to reflect on everything that this mural represents. From our country's founding to our community's spirit, it's a true testament to the American dream.
God bless America and God bless the Prado Dam Bicentennial Mural. May it continue to inspire us for generations and beyond. https://youtu.be/DVscZgFOanY

Faded Memories Part 10
1880 Mail Carts
The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe carts were manufactured
in the 1880s and were often mistaken for baggage carts.
_________________________________________
The Orange County Register published an article “Office Puts Realtor on New Track” on July 17, 1973. The article reported that MJB Realty had opened an office in Yorba Linda's Pacific Electric Train Depot three years earlier. Owner, Jerry Kolb, thought it would be a good location for his business and was pleasantly surprised when train buffs began dropping in.
Branch manager, Beverly Pool, stated, "You wouldn't believe the number of people who follow trains. We really didn't have much in the way of artifacts to show them and we didn't know anything about trains. So, we began to collect things.” The office collected railway wrenches, spikes, old train schedules and books about trains. It was the beginning of a love affair of trains, enjoyed by many.
As they became more involved and fascinated by trains, Kolb decided to purchase 20 mail carts that would be displayed near the depot. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe carts were in excellent condition. They were manufactured in the 1880s and were often mistaken for baggage carts. The carts were used at Union Station in Los Angeles up until the late 1960’s.
Each metal cart weighs 1800 pounds. They measure six feet long by six feet high and are enclosed with mesh that kept mail inside. The carts have hard paddle wheel tires and steel spokes. Each is masterfully designed with the ability to turn on a dime like a precision drill team. A tow motor pulled up to 60 carts at a time.
In the early days of mail delivery, each cart displayed the name of a major city. The carts could be easily maneuvered when the train pulled up. Mail was thrown into the cart for various large cities or was already pre-sorted for delivery.
It appeared that what was missing was a caboose! (to be continued)

to our Pacific Electric Depot in the 1970's.

The baggage carts can still be seen in front of the Union Pacific caboose,
immediately to the west of Polly's Pies and in front of the Trueblood Home.

CAPTURED: Shot Down in Vietnam at The Nixon Library
_____________________________________________
Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!
During the Vietnam War, hundreds of American aviators were shot down, imprisoned, tortured, and beaten in North Vietnam. They experienced the harshest conditions imaginable as Prisoners of War.
For as many as eight long years, the Vietnam POWs stayed true to their mission and survived behind bars. They communicated through codes and wraps on prison walls. They were unbelievably brave and resisted enemy propaganda. And their families knew little of their fate.
Opening May 24, 2023: At the Nixon Library, relive the harrowing experience of hell in the Hanoi Hilton and gripping tales of resilience, fortitude, and faith. See more than 75 unique artifacts from around the country, on display together for the first time. Launch from an aircraft carrier ready room into the skies. Get up close to a recreated, rat-infested prison cell. And relive the national celebration that was their homecoming, including the largest dinner in White House history.
This new, original Nixon Library exhibit is in Honor of Ross Perot.
Captured: Shot Down In Vietnam opens at the Nixon Library on May 24, 2023 and is only open for a limited time.
Don’t delay — order your tickets now!

How to Remove Skunk Smells-Opinion
From a post on Facebook
________________________________
The best way we’ve found to remove the smell of skunk is:
1 bottle hydrogen peroxide,
1 tablespoon dish soap
1/4 cup baking soda
Sponge
Put first two in bowl, have the stinky one ready in sink and just before you sponge the mixture on add baking soda. Be VERY careful not to get it in nose or eyes. Massage through hair. Let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing. Use your regular soap, rinse, dry. You literally can let them sleep on your bed after with no issues.
