Get the Lowdown with Dr. Lowe

York Academy Families:

Many thanks to those of you who have finished the PA School Climate Survey. If you haven't, please do it now. The survey is conducted by the PA Department of Education, Office for Safe Schools, and it is important that all parents/guardians and staff complete it. You will need to take it separately for each of your children. It's short and will only take a few minutes. The deadline is this Friday

Our seniors performed at their final recital over the weekend. It was a tremendous show and I was impressed to see how much they’ve grown. Many thanks to Mr. Gregory for guiding and empowering them to be risk-takers and share their talents on stage. Here are a few pictures. Great job, Knights!

Student-Led Conferences

As a reminder, parking is not permitted in the gravel lot during Student-Led Conferences. Options include Small’s Field (31 Hamilton Ave.), on-street parking (Park Mobile App), the large lot behind the Lower School (129 N. Beaver Street), and the Philadelphia Street Parking Garage (24 W. Philadelphia St.).

The PTO Uniform Swap will be open, so please stop by and take a look. It’s located up the stairs near the Lower School Gym doors. Feel free to bring any gently used uniforms to donate, too.

Your child’s artwork will also be displayed near their classroom and throughout all three floors. Before you leave, we encourage you to walk around the building to view their colorful pieces. Many thanks to Mrs. Winters for sharing her knowledge and creativity with them. Here’s a sneak peek.

You're invited to our MYP Personal Project Exhibition Night on Thursday, March 28 from 5 - 7 p.m. at the Upper School!

The Personal Project is the culminating MYP assessment and helps prepare students for the challenge of the Diploma Programme and in life beyond the classroom. Over an extended period of time, they used their inquiry, research and communication skills to explore areas of personal interest.

Upper School staff and facilitators from the International Baccalaureate Organization grade the projects using three criteria. Students are graded on their planning, approaches to learning (ATL) skills, and reflecting on different aspects of their projects.  They would love to share their new knowledge with you, so please stop by!

Top Speedsters Excel in Annual Pink Belt Competition

Playing music requires musicians to be able to process written music quickly. Music performance demands very specific timing - certain things must happen at very specific times. The faster a musician can recall notated rhythmic symbols, the more smoothly they will play.

The Pink Belt Competition is an annual tradition that works to shorten the processing time it takes to read music notation. All instrumental students are challenged to recall rhythmic symbols as fast as possible.

Everyone did a great job with Pink Belt this year! Congrats to these students who topped the list of speedsters:

Band: 1st Place - Braxton Bechtel (clarinet)

Band: 2nd Place - Sofiah Bond (clarinet)

Strings: 1st Place – Micah Dayes (violin)

Strings: 2nd Place – Elizabeth Heberlig (violin)

Way to go, Knights!

Upper School Musical: Once on This Island

The Upper School Musical, Once on This Island, is happening in April! Our students are excited to share this Tony Award-Winning show with you. The dates are listed below. Here's a synopsis:

Once on a golden and lush green Caribbean island, a little girl is rescued from a disastrous storm by four gods: Asaka (mother of the Earth), Agwé (god of water), Erzulie (goddess of love), and Papa Ge (demon of death).

The myth told in this breathtaking story is one of joy and sorrow, the aftermath of colonization and isolation, and the triumph of love against all forces. Told with Caribbean rhythms and instruments, Once on This Island is a testament that a beautiful story has the power to inspire and heal all.

Please come support our talented students!
