Get the Lowdown with Dr. Lowe

York Academy Families:

It’s National Principals Month and we're fortunate to have two strong, caring leaders at the York Academy. I’d like to highlight Mrs. Alvarnaz, Head of the Upper School.

Mrs. Alvarnaz began her career at the York Academy as a Middle School Math Teacher in 2015. Before transitioning into the role of Head of School, she also served as the MYP Coordinator.

Mrs. Alvarnaz is a visionary who leads with her head and heart. She is the Upper School’s ultimate cheerleader! Mrs. Alvarnaz loves to celebrate student achievements and support those who are falling behind. You can be sure she’ll be wearing House colors from head to toe on Drip Days and going all in on themed days – especially during Homecoming Spirit Week. In addition, Mrs. Alvarnaz has wonderful relationships with her staff and constantly provides tips and ideas to help them connect with their students. She is passionate about the York Academy and is an excellent leader. When you see Mrs. Alvarnaz next, please let her know that you appreciate her hard work.

Lastly, watch for the annual “Spook Hauntcerts” by our talented instrumental musicians tomorrow. You’ll be impressed by their fang-tastic performances!

Enjoy the evening,

Dr. Lowe

Duggar Wins Countywide "I Voted" Sticker Design Contest

After you vote, the sticker you receive just may be designed by freshman, Estella Dugger! York County Commissioners and the Cultural Alliance collaborated on a countywide sticker design contest for K-12 students. Estella won in her category! Her beautiful design symbolizes equality, freedom and unity. We're incredibly proud of her for reflecting on what voting means to her, and communicating those feelings in such a meaningful way. Way to be a risktaker, Estella. You are so talented!

Knight Staff Superstar: John Franklin

Congrats to John Franklin (Upper School Special Education Teacher) on being our Knight Staff Superstar! He was nominated for embodying the IB learner profile attribute of being a strong communicator.

According to his nominator, "Mr. Franklin has only been at the York Academy for a short time, but he has already made a huge impact on our school community. In his role as a Special Education Teacher, he communicates excellently with his students, their families and the teachers. Each day, Mr. Franklin goes above and beyond to make sure that his students are appropriately supported so they can be academically successful and show personal growth. Additionally, Mr. Franklin is incredibly helpful to his colleagues and collaborates well with them."

Thanks for jumping in and making life better for others. We are lucky to have you on the York Academy Team, Mr. Franklin!

3rd Grade Sock Fundraiser to Help Babies with Clubfoot

Our third graders are selling socks to help children born with clubfoot in other countries. There is a treatment for clubfoot that is easy and inexpensive to implement, but assistance is limited.

Through the Socks for Clubfoot Program, you can help make a difference. Families may purchase a three-pack of socks ($12), and their donation will help We Help Two (nonprofit) fund surgeries and casts for babies and children.

Plus, for each three-pack sold, We Help Two will send us a pair of warm socks to donate in our community. You will get cool socks, children in need will get the treatment they desperately need, and we’ll be able to donate socks to a charity locally.

There are many fun designs to choose from, so please purchase some funky socks so we can reach our goal!
