The Lowdown with Dr. Lowe

Hello York Academy Families:

I want to make you aware of some construction that will be happening near our schools through September. According to this article, Kinsley Construction will be working on a safety project to widen the sidewalk along the bridge that crosses the Codorus Creek on N. George Street. For reference, this is the bridge near the Upper School and the Revs Stadium. The goal is to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists to access the Heritage Rail Trail next to Keystone Kidspace.

They will also resurface about a mile of N. George Street, heading toward North York. The construction will begin at the intersection of North Street and end on Dewey Avenue near St. Peters Lutheran Church. Since the Lower School is located on North Street, we anticipate challenges for families and buses during pickup and drop off. As I learn more, I will share it with you.

I have tremendous news to share. Last week, some of our Upper School students presented their projects at the York County Science Fair at Penn State York. They represented York Academy extremely well and many of them won in their categories. Congrats to:

Senior Division (Grades 10-12)

  • 1st Place: Morgan Mullins, Maya Veiss and Ashley Morales

  • 2nd Place: Kaleb Westover, Kevin Dejesus Vargas, Samaria Dowling, Alix Grove and Trinity Derr

  • 3rd Place: Paige Kageni-Wilson, Ezequiel Adames, Jacquierra Lodge, Rose Torres, Nalani Newman-Scott, Rhiannon Gurnee, Amagiona Vega, Davion Williams, Noah Rodriguez and Mahari Kimbrow

Junior Division (Grades 7-9)

  • Reserve Grand Champion/1st Place: Eden Kleinfeld
  • 2nd Place: J'ontai Bailey
  • 3rd Place: Grace Roman and ShaTayla Bailey

Lastly, I want to share an update about safety for our students here at the Lower School. I've been seeing more parents stopping - or even parking - on the railroad tracks and in the street around the school. This is dangerous and we need to do a better job. Please keep this in mind if you pick up your child from a club, as well.

Watch this video to find out the best way to drop off and pick up your children. My goal is to keep every single student safe, and we all have to work together.

Thank you for our support and enjoy the evening,

Dr. Lowe

Student-Led Conferences Are Coming (3/23 & 3/24)

Save the dates for Student-Led Conferences. They will be held on Thursday, March 23 and Friday, March 24. Here are the details:

Lower School (K-6)

Students must attend their scheduled conference with a parent/guardian. The only time they will come to school on March 23 or March 24 is during their assigned conference time. Since York Academy is closed and there are no classes, your children should not come to school for any other reason on those two days.

Teachers will share the sign-up link through their communication platforms. If you haven't signed up for a time yet, click here. The system will walk you through the steps. You will need to use your email address to complete the registration process, as listed in the online instructions.

Upper School (7-12)

If you would like to talk with your students' Upper School teacher, please sign up for a time slot through your child’s Canvas account. Here is a video that explains the steps. If your student is in the Diploma Programme (11th & 12th) or you received a letter (grades 7 - 10), please make sure to schedule a time. All content areas will be reviewed within one conference slot, so there is no need to sign up for more than one 30-minute session. A telephone interpreter will also be available, if needed.

As a reminder, the only time students should come to school on March 23 or 24 is if they have a Student-Led Conference. School is closed and classes will not be held on those two days. Questions? Contact Mrs. Alvarnaz or Ms. Jones at (717) 900-5001.

Knight Staff Superstar: Jordan Dahlheimer

Congrats to School Counselor, Jordan Dahlheimer for being our Knight Staff Superstar! She was nominated for exemplifying the IB Learner Profile attribute of being caring.

When we are caring, we show empathy, compassion and respect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us.

According to her nominee, "Mrs. Dahlheimer goes above and beyond day in and day out. The care she shows our youngest students is amazing! If a child needs support, she will stop everything to turn their mood around and headed in a positive direction (even if she has to miss lunch). Mrs. Dahlheimer is truly a blessing to work with!"

Thank you for caring so deeply for your students and for always being ready to provide just what they need. You are appreciated, Mrs. Dahlheimer!

FAME is coming to York Academy in April!

Our amazing Upper School students will be transformed into 80s performers for our spring musical, FAME! It will be held over two weekends: April 21 - 23 and April 28-30.

Here's a summary: Bringing back the 80s, FAME tells the story of several students who attend the highly acclaimed High School of Performing Arts in New York. We follow four years in the lives of the students, as we see their ambitions, successes, challenges and relationships. The class experiences life's hurdles in their journey to becoming stars, learning that they cannot just perform their way through life. With a little bit of "Hard Work" they finally learn what it means to achieve "Fame."

More information is coming, but in the meantime, check out the dates and plan to come support our amazing students!

The Lower School Summer Reading Program is Back!

We are thrilled to share that the Lower School Summer Reading Program for students in K-6th grade is back again! It runs from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. on Thursdays from June 15 to July 27 in the Media Center/Library. Please note that every child must be accompanied by an adult (18+). Here are two examples of sessions that are planned:

6/22: A representative from the York Revolution will join us and tell stories of his role in the Revs organization. He'll also bring books about baseball and free items!

6/29: Local author Susan Lowe will bring her books and share them with us. This is a great opportunity to learn about becoming an author! Find out how an author gets ideas for a book, how long it takes to write one and how to get it published. Put your brain in gear and come with questions!

Watch for registration details here in the coming weeks!

Shop at the Uniform & Apparel Store Anytime

As a reminder, the online Uniform and Apparel Store is now open all the time, with a rolling deadline. Here's how it works.

At the very top of the website, you will always want to look for a deadline in small print. The next deadline is April 2. All orders that have been submitted up to April 2 will be processed and delivered in about four weeks. On April 3, a new round of orders will start and there will be a new deadline.

The link will always be the same. You can find it under the Parents tab on our website. Just make sure to check the deadline when making your purchase.

Water Bottle Update

If your child brings a water bottle to school, it should only be filled with water. Please do not send them to school with Gatorade, juice, milk, soda or any other beverage. Drinks other than water can cause unnecessary messes. Thank you!
