The Lowdown with Dr. Lowe
Good Evening York Academy Families:

We are so fortunate at the York Academy to have such outstanding leadership in our buildings. With October identified as National School Principals Month, I will be highlighting our Heads of School over the next few weeks. This week's focus is on Ms. Carol Alvarnaz, who has worked for the York Academy over the past seven years and is the Acting Head of the Upper School.

Ms. Alvarnaz leads with both her head and heart. She truly loves the work she does and has had a major impact on our students, their families, the staff and faculty.
Ms. Alvarnaz is a visionary and thinks of new ways to connect with all of our stakeholders. She has been instrumental in sharing her vision with the Upper School faculty to build stronger relationships with our students. Ms. Alvarnaz can often be found with students before and after school attending club activities, conducting her own flex period or checking on students during lunch. She is so good at what she does because she leads by example. When you see Ms. Alvarnaz this week, let her know the reason you appreciate the valuable work she does at the Upper School.

Also, keep up the good work with masking and make sure to utilize our daily COVID-19 screening tool each morning. We all appreciate your support and efforts to keep our school community as healthy as possible.

Thanks and enjoy your evening,
Dr. Michael Lowe
Knight Staff Superstart: Marla Urey
Congrats to Upper School Nurse Mrs. Marla Urey on being nominated for our Knight Staff Superstar and embodying the International Baccalaureate learner profile attribute of being caring.

When we are caring, we show empathy, compassion and respect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us.

Mrs. Urey has always been caring and compassionate toward our students and their needs, but her role has gone into "overdrive" since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2019. She is continually working behind the scenes to help students, communicate with families, and share guidance and expectations on keeping our York Academy community safe. Mrs. Urey's nominee says, "She provides us with strength and hope that we can be a healthy, thriving learning community, and we are so grateful for everything she does for us!"

Thank you for the countless ways you make a difference, Mrs. Urey. You are appreciated!

Athletics Update
Due to the uncertainty of COVID-19 cases in the local community, York Academy will not be participating in interclub/league athletics this school year. While this decision is disappointing to all of us, inconsistencies in mask wearing and social distancing across the area are of concern. This decision was made to ensure, as much as possible, the health and safety of our students, families and community. If community transmission rates decrease, York Academy will consider offering intramural athletics at that time.
Knights International Partner with The Giving Bean
There is nothing like the smell of fresh coffee in the morning! If you are a coffee fiend, you are going to love this fundraiser by Knights International. For the start of the fall season, our students are partnering with The Giving Bean, a company that takes beans right from the growers to place into small batches to give customers the freshest at home coffee experience. If you are not a coffee person but enjoy teas, cookies/biscotti, cocoa or other fall/winter drinks and accessories, give our fundraising page a quick look!

Click the link below to be directed to the Giving Bean and Knights International's fundraising page. As always, we thank you in advance for helping our students raise dollars to fund next year's trip to Spain!

Senior Ceiling Tile Project
It is tradition that the senior class leave a gift to the school - a piece of themselves with their memories that serves as a constant reminder saying, “we were here.” As we graduate our first class from York Academy in 2022, we would like to offer this opportunity to our seniors!

They are welcome to purchase or commission square ceiling tiles for $20. These tiles will be removed from the ceiling outside of room 300 for the students to paint or decorate in a way that best represents their time here at York Academy. When the tiles are returned, they will be placed back in the ceiling for all to see! All funds from the tiles will support activities for the senior class. For details and instructions, click below.
November Parents Night Out Event
Join Mrs. Chester and National Art Honor Society students on Friday, November 5th for the third Parents' Night Out of this year. We've had so much fun seeing old friends and meeting new ones! In November, we'll play fun Halloween and Dia de los Muertos themed games in the gym and watch Coco in the Dennis P. Baughman Center for Creative Expression (black box theater)! Come show off your Halloween costume one more time and score some frighteningly festive treats! All children in grades kindergarten through sixth are invited to join us. Click below for details and register now. We hope to see you there!
