The Lowdown with Dr. Lowe

Hello York Academy Families:

This year, we've been working hard to develop an even better climate at the York Academy. Around this time last year, you may recall taking the Climate Survey. It was administered to parents, students in grades 3 - 12, our employees and community members. In the video below, I will provide an update on some of the data points from the student survey.

We are also getting ready for the second administration of the survey. It will take place for students, staff and parents the week of February 6.

Thank you for all you do to support your children, along with our teachers and staff.

Enjoy the evening,

Dr. Michael Lowe

Knight Staff Superstar: Shannon Lander

Congrats to sixth grade Instructional Assistant, Shannon Lander for being our Knight Staff Superstar! She was nominated by sixth grade teacher, Olivia Kratzer for exemplifying the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile attribute of being caring.

When we are caring, we show empathy, compassion and respect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us.

Mrs. Lander joined the sixth grade team a few weeks into the school year and hit the ground running. "She has built fantastic relationships with all of our students, and many of them look to her for academic support and personal advice," Ms. Kratzer said. "Mrs. Lander always assists her team members and is willing to try new things. She is a great addition to the sixth grade team."

Thank you for caring so deeply for your students and colleagues, Mrs. Lander. You are appreciated!

Basketball Teams Make Home Game Debuts

Congrats to the YARCS basketball teams on a great showing last Friday! Our 7th/8th, 9th/10th and 11/12th Grade Boys Teams won, and two of the games were buzzer beaters! Upper School students celebrated the first game with a White Out, and they packed the student section! Click here to view some pictures.

You can catch the Knights at home again on Friday (1/20)! This week, our student section will be sporting neon colors, big hair and leg warmers. They're encouraged to dress in their 80s best to the game (but NOT to school).

  • Would you like your student's sibling(s) to start school at York Academy in August?
  • You must apply online between February 1 and March 31 so they are included in the Lottery.

  • Is your child on the current waiting list? You will need to reapply for the 2023-24 school year because we are not legally permitted to carry over applications from year to year.

Notes from the Kitchen

Hello Friends,

Please check your student’s cafeteria balance frequently. It is easy to do by setting up an account through www.myschoolbucks.com. After registering, you can set low balance notifications and view your student’s purchases. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to ensure payment for meals purchased.

If you did not apply for free/reduced meals and you believe you may benefit, click here for details on how to apply.

The quickest and most accurate way to apply is at www.schoolcafe.com. You would have received verification from York Academy if your student receives free/reduced meal benefits. Do not assume if your student was receiving free/reduced benefits in a previous school year that they will receive it every year. Families must apply yearly for this benefit. If your student has a negative balance, please send in payment.

Make sure to visit the food service page at www.yorkacademy.com. You will find it under the parents tab. There is so much useful information there and I encourage everyone to read it.

In addition, York Academy is hiring a full time position in our kitchen! This is a great opportunity with great benefits. Click here to learn more and apply. You may also contact me at (717) 801-3900 ext. 4313 or [email protected].

Eat Well and Be Healthy,

Gina Arnold, Food Services Manager

Updates and Reminders

  • Since we're halfway through the year, it's a good time to revisit the Student Code of Conduct and review the expectations with your children. For example, it's important to make sure they are on time each and every day, dressed in the appropriate uniform, and making choices to support their learning and the learning of other students.
