Hello all,
A few days ago I received a message from VDOT asking for my input on a project that is exploring potential improvements for Route 17 between Denbigh Blvd. and Cook Road. Given the impact this will have on many of us who travel on the Route 17 corridor, I wanted to give everyone an opportunity to participate in the survey.
You can find the survey at their Project Pipeline Route 17 Study. We have until September 20th to complete the survey and I encourage everyone to take a few minutes to provide input. The more feedback VDOT receives, the better they can tailor the project to meet our needs for Route 17.
Below is the full text of the message I received:
GIVE INPUT ON YORK COUNTY ROUTE 17 (GEORGE WASHINGTON MEMORIAL HIGHWAY) PROJECT STUDY
Take online survey through Sept. 20; more information at vaprojectpipeline.org
YORK COUNTY – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking feedback on a transportation study assessing potential operational and safety improvements for Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Highway) between Denbigh Boulevard and Cook Road in York County.
The study will identify cost-effective, preferred improvements with a focus on providing enhanced pedestrian, bicycle and transit access as well as preserving vehicular capacity, transportation-demand management and safety improvements.
VDOT invites residents and travelers to learn more about the study at VAProjectPipeline.org and take an online survey through Sept. 20. Community input received through this survey will help the study team identify existing issues along the study corridor and develop recommendations for potential improvements that will be evaluated and presented during the next phase of the study, which will include another opportunity for public comments.
The survey, which has a translation tool for other languages, is available at https://publicinput.com/hr-23-09. Comments can also be sent to Jerry.Pauley@VDOT.Virginia.gov or to Jerry Pauley, Virginia Department of Transportation, 7511 Burbage Drive, Suffolk, VA 23435.
This study is being conducted as part of the Project Pipeline program, which was created by the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB). Project Pipeline is a performance-based planning program to identify cost-effective solutions to multimodal transportation needs in Virginia. Project Pipeline is led by Virginia’s Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment (OIPI), in collaboration with VDOT and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT).
The Commonwealth is partnering with York County, the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO), and consultants Kimley-Horn and EPR, P.C. to develop targeted improvements for the study that minimize community impacts and address priority needs in a cost-effective way. This study is expected to be complete in summer 2024; it does not set construction dates for any improvements. The potential improvements established during the studies are only preliminary and are not scheduled or funded as a construction project at this time. The final plan will provide a multimodal investment strategy that can be used to seek and secure funding through programs including SMART SCALE, revenue sharing, interstate funding, and others.
