Please help Spencer
Spencer is a five-year-old precious male Yorkie who was dropped off at a high kill shelter in Southern Ohio after being found as a stray.  He had several broken and missing teeth, an eye infection, almost no hair and a torn cruciate ligament in one of his back legs.  He was surrendered to Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue from Gigi's Rescue in Ohio. Thanks to Gigi's he was able to be vaccinated and his broken teeth were removed but they couldn't repair the leg. The estimate for his surgery is $3160.00.

Despite all the pain and discomfort, this handsome boy remains loving and sweet . He would like nothing better than to cuddle with you on your lap all day if given the chance. He loves his toys and his new soft bed.
Spencer is depending on us to help him live a pain free life. Help us help him. Please give what you can towards his surgery.  We thank you and Spencer thanks you.

Lynn's  recycling
WHAT IS YOUR YORKIE SUPPORTING SUPERPOWER?

Lynn Garcia, the mommy to four little Yorkie rascals, and long-term supporter of YTNR, and animal rescue overall - has done it again. She garnered the support of neighbors and friends, collected all their bottles and cans, cashed them in, and donated over $300.00 to YTNR!

Lynn's helping to make a difference in the care of our little dogs we take in. All together YTNR's friends in Oregon have recycled over $600.00 of bottles and cans over the past year.

We would also like to say a heartfelt thank you to Summer, Jordan, Jamie, Tanya, Marilyn, Stacey, Roxy, Kathleen, Veronica, Hannelie, and all the ones we forgot to mention, for their recycling and support. Please consider joining Oregon and taking up the challenge to find your niche and out-donate the Oregonian recyclers this coming year.

Every dollar counts - and every dollar goes to our Yorkie saving cause. So please unleash your superpower to help empower YTNR in saving lives.

Bosco - A Rescue Dog's Story

January 1st of this year sweet, little Bosco came into rescue. This furry Yorkie arrived with a long, matted coat and curved nails, barking his little head off with anxiety and wreaking of urine, feces and who knows what. It was heartbreaking! Keeping my energy as calm as possible, once in my car, Bosco quieted down. It was freezing cold outside that day, but the stench was so dense in my car I needed to intermittently crack the windows to breathe.
Once home, the bedraggled little body emerged from his crate shivering and inconsolable. There was nothing left to do except throw his bed and blanket in a scalding hot wash and put his crate outside. Unbelievably, his food was of equal bouquet so into the trash it went.
The next thing to do was to bathe him. Sounds easy, right? The mats in his coat were so huge, it was hard to wet him down, hard to shampoo him, and impossible to comb out. By the time the first bath was finished, and the mats were cut out of his coat, he was completely dry yet still stinking. Into the bath he went again. And again. Finally, he was tolerable enough to not provoke a gag reflex.
As the days passed, plans were made to visit the vet and the groomer. In the meantime, Bosco and I were getting acquainted. This little angel didn't know anything. Having been left to his own devices for so many years he'd become insecure and created bad habits borne out of neglect and a lack of mental stimulation. He shook for no reason; he licked obsessively at a spot on his back; he paced like a caged tiger, and barked without reason; and of course, he was never house-trained, and would sit trembling on my lap, a nervous wreck. One can only imagine the harrowing life he'd led and what must have been going on in his little mind. Now he'd been thrust into a new situation with new people, new smells, new surroundings, new routines, new, new, new! That's enough to unnerve any creature.
The wonderful thing about dogs is they live in the present -- if you'll let them. With calmness, encouragement, love, appropriate expectations, boundaries and routine, the new Bosco emerged. He was suddenly calmer, and able to focus. He quickly learned what an appropriate amount of barking was, and almost always used the pee pads as opposed to going everywhere and anywhere, slowly allowing himself to be picked up and loved on. It always took him a minute to relax but if I stayed patient and calm, he'd do it.
This sweet little senior is ready for his furever home. He's nothing but a complete bundle of love who wants only to please.
Unfortunately, Bosco's story is not a unique one. What's the answer? Education and public awareness. Not all dogs coming into rescue are surrendered by awful people. Sometimes life throws us curves and we have to make impossible decisions. If we remove judgment and shame and encouraged folks to do the right thing sooner, we could positively affect more lives and possibly end the suffering of more dogs.
Until then, sweet little Bosco remains waiting for his furever home. He's very happy here with his 44-pound Poodle sister, his 5-pound Yorkie sister and his two foster hoomans. (I won't list my weight as it would be totally embarrassing :o) ) The best part is no matter what happens from this moment forward, little Bosco will be forever loved.

Keeping Pets Safe on Valentine's Day
advice from ASPCA

Pet-Safe Bouquets
When sending a floral arrangement to someone with a cat, specify that it contain no lilies-and when receiving an arrangement, sift through and remove  all dangerous flora. If your pet is suffering from symptoms such as lethargy, vomiting or diarrhea, he may have ingested an offending flower or plant. Use our online  toxic and nontoxic plant libraries as visual guides of what shouldn't be in your bouquets.

Forbidden Chocolate
Seasoned pet lovers know that all types of chocolate are potentially life-threatening when ingested by pets. Methylxanthines are caffeine-like stimulants that affect gastrointestinal, neurologic and cardiac function-they can cause vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, seizures and an abnormally elevated heart rate. The high-fat content in lighter chocolates can potentially lead to a life-threatening inflammation of the pancreas. Go ahead and indulge, but don't leave chocolate out for chowhounds to find.

Careful with Cocktails
Spilled wine, a half a glass of champagne or some leftover liquor are nothing to cry over until a curious pet laps them up. Because animals are smaller than humans, a little bit of alcohol can do a lot of harm, causing vomiting, diarrhea, lack of coordination, central nervous system depression, tremors, difficulty breathing, metabolic disturbances and even coma. Potentially fatal respiratory failure can also occur if a large amount is ingested.

Life Is Sweet
So don't let pets near treats sweetened with xylitol. If ingested, gum, candy and other treats that include this sweetener can result in hypoglycemia (a sudden drop in blood sugar). This can cause your pet to suffer depression, loss of coordination and seizures.

Every Rose Has Its Thorn
Don't let pets near roses or other thorny-stemmed flowers. Biting, stepping on or swallowing their sharp, woody spines can cause serious infection if a puncture occurs. De-thorn your roses far away from pets.

Playing with Fire
It's nice to set your evening a-glow with candlelight, but put out the fire when you leave the room. Pawing kittens and nosy pooches can burn themselves or cause a fire by knocking over unattended candles.

Wrap It Up
Gather up tape, ribbons, bows, wrapping paper, cellophane and balloons after presents have been opened-if swallowed, these long, stringy and "fun-to-chew" items can get lodged in your pet's throat or digestive tract, causing her to choke or vomit.

Neeko's Joke

One day, a cat dies of natural causes and goes to heaven, where he meets Saint Peter himself. Saint Peter says to the cat, "You lived a good life, and if there is any way I can make your stay in heaven more comfortable, please let me know." The cat thinks for a moment and says, "Peter, all my life I have lived with a poor family and had to sleep on a hard wooden floor." Saint Peter stops the cat and says, "Say no more," and a wonderful, fluffy pillow appears.

A few days later, six mice are killed in a tragic farming accident, and all of them go to heaven. Again, Saint Peter is there to greet them with the same offer. The mice answer, "All our lives we have been chased. We have had to run from cats, dogs, and even women with brooms. Running, running, running; we're tired of running. Do you think we could have roller skates so that we don't have to run anymore?" Saint Peter says, "Say no more" and fits each mouse with beautiful new roller skates. About a week later, Saint Peter stops by to see the cat and finds him snoozing on the pillow. Saint Peter gently wakes the cat and asks him, "How are things since you got here?" The cat stretches and yawns, then replies, "It is wonderful here. Better than I could have ever expected. And those Meals On Wheels you've been sending by are the best!"
