" When we adopt a dog or any pet, we know it is going to end with us having to say goodbye, but we still do it. And we do it for a very good reason: They bring so much joy and optimism and happiness.
They attack every moment of every day with that attitude."

YORKSHIRE TERRIER NATIONAL RESCUE
Adopt, foster, sponsor, volunteer, donate and/or educate.

Written by Hannelie Vermeulen

Across the US, sixty eight percent of households have animals, and ~90 million dogs live as pets in our homes (according to the Statistics Portal). As a culture we love our dogs, and over the years they have become increasingly part of our lives. Some dogs have it good and live in responsible households who provide them with adequate love and care, and who spay and neuter them, or are careful with their intact animals. They are treated as family members.

Unfortunately, not all dogs are so lucky. Some languish in puppy mills until they are no longer able to procreate, some get bred by small breeders or families for financial gain. Others do not get spayed and neutered and produce unplanned puppies. That's where rescue and animal advocates can make a difference.

If you are just looking for a companion, please ADOPT, and don't shop.

Bella from Southern California says, "Me me me please!"

If you are not able to adopt, please consider FOSTERing. At YTNR we are always in desperate need of fosters - since we can only take in dogs when we have someone who can welcome them into their homes until behaviorally and medically assessed, cleared, and adopted. Like many 501 (c) 3 rescues, we do not kennel our dogs, but work with them in a home environment to continue socialization and temperament checking.

Charlie and Bart, fostered in Northern California,
are looking for their forever home.

Not everyone is able to take in an extra little four legged. At times a lease prevents us, at times life circumstances prevent us, and at times it's just not an option. If you are unable to foster, please think about becoming a SPONSOR. At YTNR we rely on our monthly or yearly sponsors to help provide an income that we can use towards caring for, and rehoming, a little dog. Our income goes directly to the care of our dogs, not to administrative costs.

Bentley's life was turned around by sponsor money - but he still needs a forever home!

Running a rescue takes skill. Many different skills. If you are not able to sponsor, please consider becoming a VOLUNTEER. We have some of the best! We could use creative skills, such as making crafts that can be sold, (Corrine in Indiana makes amazing dresses, and hygiene products for incontinent or difficult to potty train dogs.) We have other volunteers who run booths at fairs to sell products, alert people to our animals up for adoption, and educate, like Jackie and her wonderful group of volunteers, in Illinois. We also have volunteers writing for, and publishing (thank you Amalia, in Illinois), our monthly newsletter, and we just had volunteers put out our second own coloring book - thank you Ronnie and Jon in Arizona! We have volunteers doing administrative and other tasks (thank you Patti in California), and volunteers collecting cans and recycling for cash, like Tanya, Summer, Jordan, Marilyn, Stacey and Roxy, in Oregon. Every can in Oregon gives us 10 cents. We would love any way you could volunteer and help out a Yorkie. Please consider YTNR when you are looking to utilize your skills.

Not everyone is crafty or has time to volunteer, but most of us have a checkbook or access to PayPal, and sometimes a few dollars to spare. Please be so kind as to consider a one time or occasional donation. We appreciate it so much when we get in a little dog that needs extensive care, and caring individuals step up and help us pay. When you   undefined , you help save a life, no matter the size of your gift, (which is also tax deductible).

Suzanne has a new lease on life due to donations by caring people.

At times life is hard, and we can't skim off a few dollars. In that case, please consider reaching out to EDUCATE. Educate people on animal care, animal safety, and as the summer comes up, about not leaving animals in hot cars, and not walk them on hot pavements or roads. Teach them what you know, in a kind and supportive way. The doggies gain from that.

We walk on safe leashes that do not constrict our tracheas.

If you cannot educate, share our story, and that of our rescues   YorkieRescue.com. You may help someone else become involved in the good cause of saving lives!

Most of all, thank you for being an animal lover, and for making a difference! Thank you for being a part of Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue, where we work as a team to heal and save.

Looking for a Furever Home
Meet Precious Ebony ♥
(fostered in Indiana )

Hi, my name is Ebony! I am a special needs little Yorkie, weighing about 6 pounds.

I am a loving little man who loves people and dogs. Another thing, boy do I love to eat I don't think I have ever missed a meal. I do very well in a car; may whimper once in a while for attention. Love going outside and sitting on mom's lap. I prefer this rather than the ground; love being close to my person. I really don't know that there is anything wrong with me, I think I am perfect.

I am looking for the perfect furever Parent. It needs to be someone who is experienced and  loves taking care of little dogs like myself.  I am now 5 ½ years old. When first coming to YTNR, the specialist diagnosed me with nerve damage. It is believed that something happened in the birth canal.  I can't control my body functions because of the nerve damage, so I will need to be cleaned up many times a day. Also, will need to be bathed almost every day. I wear a belly band but not 24/7 because of the possibility of UTI's. I sleep in an x-pen with a fat pillow and a potty pad. Sometimes I pee on my pillow (I can't help it) so there will be doggy washing stuff every day. I will tell you a secret though: I don't like the bath (please don't tell anyone.) I do love the blow dryer and don't mind the clippers. I love being brushed; it feels so good to me. My foster mom now keeps my hair very short for hygiene purposes. I am still handsome even with short hair.

I also love cuddling with my foster mom, she spends quality time with me every night, it makes me feel so loved. She has to put the other dogs to bed otherwise they try to butt in on my time (not cool.) When I hear the Velcro being pulled apart on the belly band, I get so excited because I know it's loving time.

I can get up on my back legs but only for a moment then my bottom hits the ground.
We have tried wheels, but I am not strong enough to stay standing in them for very long; get tried to easily.  So, I whispered into my foster mom's ear to forget the dang wheels!

My foster mom has had me since I was 8 weeks old, boy I was a cute little booger, still am, my foster mom says, and she is never wrong.

Please, is there someone (very special) out there who can love me the way I am and make me feel loved and safe???
Check out my Summer hairdo

PS I need someone who is home most of the time.

In Loving Memory

IN MEMORIUM
RIP CHARLIE BROWN
May 26, 2019

With great sadness we inform you that our beloved Charlie Brown has crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

He left this earth in the arms of his adoring Mom (and YTNR foster parent and volunteer) Ann Sousa, who adopted him after his owner, Mick Arendt, also a YTNR volunteer, passed away in 2018. Charlie had been diagnosed with a heart murmur, but was doing generally well . He suddenly  stopped eating and became lethargic. His vet erinarian discovered fluid around his heart and in his stomach. He was having difficulty in breathing, and his little heart was barely beating. It was time to say goodbye, time to be free of sadness and illness . Time to see his daddy again.

Charlie leaves behind so many memories for all he came in contact with - but also heartache and sadness, especially for his mommy. In Ann's words: " Charlie was such a good old soul. I am devastated ".

Ann, thank you for giving Charlie Brown a wonderful last year of his life.   Thank you for loving him, and for giving him a family again, when his little world fell apart with the death of his daddy. You are his hero - and you are our YTNR hero - for helping save an old loved doggie, and teaching him he will always be loved, no matter what. Teaching him his life mattered, and that there are second chances.

Everyone who met Charlie Brown fell in love with him.   Patti was one of the lucky ones who met him when YTNR pulled him from the shelter, where he landed after his daddy's death, and helped transport him. He stole her heart too. If she had to describe him, she would use the word " delicious " , and if she could've kept him, she would have . He was temporarily fostered with Marge while his medical issues were addressed by YTNR. W e were all so thankful when Ann stepped up to light up his little life again first as his foster mommy then as his forever mommy.

Dear Charlie is now an angel, and once again with Mick, his original daddy, who preceded him in death. Charlie, your mommy Ann and all of us at YTNR will miss you, and will always love you. Rest In Peace sweet Charlie Brown.

Every now and then a special pet will cross your path, whether home bred, purchased, or rescued. Gracie was one of those special rescues. She had a tough start in life. She was blind, had had a femur fracture, eye ulceration, neuro disorder with seizures....and she was not quite 3 years old. My heart melted and she became a part of my life. Gracie was so smart and although she could not see, made up with her hearing. Grace quickly learned to navigate the house to get to food  and water and eventually the potty pads. She went to all away shows due to her neuro conditions and meds. She learned the layout of the hotel room but her specialty was getting underfoot. She loved to snuggle next to me in bed. Gracie was the recipient of the YTNR Smokey Award for 2018 for which I was honored. This past Monday evening, she apparently threw a clot, as she could not stand or walk when I arrived home. She was still eating and drinking yesterday, with my help, but we did see her vet Dr. McDivitt. By this morning, she did not want to eat. My little chow hound refusing food? Not good. I had an appointment around noon and when I got home, Gracie had a pleading look in her eyes. She and I laid down on my bed and she quickly snuggled into her favorite position and passed peacefully. My heart is broken tonight. Gracie you were only 3# but you were bigger than life and so loved. I will miss you baby girl more than you will know. But now you can see as you run and play over the Rainbow Bridge. RIP Gracie.

It is eerily terrifying that there is no sound when a heart breaks.
Car accidents end with a bang, falling ends with a thud, even writing makes the scratching sound of pencil against paper. But the sound of a heart breaking is completely silent. Almost as though no one, not even the universe itself could create a sound for such devastation. Almost as though silence is the only way the universe could pay its respect to the sound of a heart falling apart."

The Hot CBD Trend for Pets - Risky or a Godsend?
Written by  Dr. Karen Shaw Becker

Recently at the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Dr. Stephanie McGrath, who specializes in treating seizure disorders and inflammatory brain diseases in animals, completed a study of CBD for the treatment of epilepsy in dogs. Results of the study are scheduled for publication later this year. According to Bark magazine, one of the most important findings was that nearly 90% of dogs given CBD experienced a reduction in the frequency of seizures.
The Canine Brief Pain Inventory score and the Hudson activity score were used to assess pain and lameness in the dogs, and the researchers observed that the results support anecdotal reports of CBD oil's benefits. Veterinary assessments, the pain inventory and the activity score showed a significant reduction in pain and an increase in activity in the dogs who received CBD treatment.
The research team is currently conducting a similar trial with cats, and there are additional studies planned to evaluate the use of CBD oil in treating acute pain, behavior issues and during chemotherapy for pets with cancer ...

Neeko's Joke

~Vicky was at a business conference. During a break, she decided to call home collect. Her six-year-old son picked up the phone and heard a stranger's voice say, "We have Vicky on the line. Will you accept the charges?" Frantic, the six-year-old dropped the receiver and came charging outside screaming, "Dad! They have Mom! And they want money!"~
