You, Russia and Me...
The Russians (then the Soviet Union) were the bastards that had all the kids of my generation hiding under our desks waiting for the mushroom cloud to form over our nearest big city. We all had anxiety from the Cold War madness. Let me be clear we are still under attack from the Russians with the same goal of collapsing Democracy but the weapons have changed.
Its now cyber attacks, disinformation and fake news rather than atomic weapons. Many of us couldn't stand the vitriol and hatred Americans spouted at each other during the election especially on Facebook. It was very un-American!   But Putin loved it! This is not about Trump. This started 10 years ago but it did culminate in the successful campaign of Americans hating Americans and a portion of the population believing fake news on both sides. Though you can make a viable case for Putin hating Hilary Clinton, this is not about Republican or Democrat. It is about collapsing democracy from the inside!
Please don't believe me. Clinton Watts, Senior Fellow at the George Washington Center for Cyber Security and former Army Officer and FBI Agent is the real credible source.
His testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee was the most freighting.
Here is the link to his testimony its 7 minutes that will blow your mind:
Keep in mind the Putin is working his dark magic against all democracies not just the USA, Germany, France and others too.
Here are the 4 goals of the Putin's Administration according to Clint's testimony:
-1. Undermine citizen confidence in democratic governance.
-2. Foment and exacerbate divisive political fissures.
-3. Erode trust between citizens and elected officials and their institutions.
-4. Create general distrust or confusion over information sources by burring the
       lines between fact and fiction.
I refuse to the let these bastards win!
Here is what I am doing and recommend you consider some version of for yourself to combat the Putin's efforts.
  1. I now read 4 newspapers. Three of the 4 multiple Pulitzer Prize winners. One local plus the Economist magazine. No news from Facebook. See Clint's video for why.
  2. I am dedicating the Advanced Men's Course© to "Communicating Across the Divide". We will work on how to communicate when we don't see the world the same way. Whether the differences are political, generational, values, gender or any other divide.
  3. Take a Republican/Democrat (which ever one you aren't) to lunch and listen to each other with the goal of understanding their point of view with no intention of changing their mind. If you can't do that see #4.
  4. For those of us who are Progressives and thought that Trump voters were: Stupid, Voting Against their own self interest or worse, you must read "Don't Think of an Elephant" by George Lakoff. The first 18 pages Lakoff convinced me my prejudices about Trump voters were just that. Secondarily Read "Hillbilly Elegy" by JD Vance. The story of a family from Kentucky and Ohio that helped me understand why one group of historically loyal Democrats voted for Trump.
If you believe in Democracy we cannot let the Putin's attacks take it from us. We must fight. Stand up and participate in what ever democracy you are in around the world. And practice listening with those close to you who you don't see eye to eye with. OK to scream at the Town Hall not at the dinner table!
Make no mistake we are at war with current Russian Administration again. Be very clear you and I are combatants in this war!
As always we invite your comments.

Feedback from the Fried Green Millennials article
(In case you missed it here is a link to last months Newsletter )
I always find these articles interesting.  If nothing else they make me stop and reflect on the fact that I am now 30 and whether I realize it or not I've fully grown in my environment.  Couple of data points.
  • As of 2017 I have known more years at war (16) than not at war in my life.  Wars fought by Millennials.
  • The world has changed and corporations have changed yet the individual thinking largely has not.  Every company wants someone with a varied past because they bring 'perspective' and 'new thinking', yet the notion of people (mostly young people) jumping around is looked at with distaste.
  • I would argue that there has been a steady and definitive erosion of community because of this.
  • Combine this with an erosion of church and most recently a significant erosion in state.
  • The country is in a massive debt, not created by millennials, but millennials will have to deal with it.
  • Millennials will also have to deal with the largest aged population in history, many of whom were complicit in the debt.
So to recap, millennials are looked at with frustration for how they act (and I get it, many of us are morons) yet they are the generation that is going to be responsible for turning this country around over the next 20 years.  I do not wonder why we burn out.  I do not wonder why they want to be treated with respect.

Something to think about...
Brandon Loss

Thank you for the article on Millenials. I appreciate your topic choice because I am one and I'm finding it to be a barrier in my workplace. I feel like there is a misunderstanding about millenials that you touched on in your article. In my experience, there seems to be an assumption that we are whiny and not willing to "put the work in" to succeed or be promoted, that we just want a "quick fix." This may be true for some of us but it also may be true of all people to some degree, especially as we continue in this age of screens and technology and instant gratification.

My frustration lies in when I am trying to provide constructive feedback and it automatically is interpreted, before I can even get the words out of my mouth, that I'm whining. This is not an effective or constructive way to have a conversation! My hope as we move forward and new "millenials" enter the workplace, is that older generations and millenials can start with a more open slate toward each other with fewer assumptions and more reflective listening. Thank you for addressing this issue in your article!
