Larry Sachs and his wife Donna moved to the River North area of Chicago in 1997, relocating to Lincoln Park in 2003 (on Orchard St., close to their beloved Oz Park where Donna is a long-time volunteer in the gardens and a member of the park's advisory council).
Larry was in government service for 47 years. He retired from Illinois Corrections in 2001 after serving in many facility-based (e.g. Reentry Manager; Accreditation Manager, Asst. Warden, Director of Clinical Services) and statewide (e.g. Juvenile Division Classification and Placement Manager) capacities.
Subsequently, as Director of Grants Management for the Chicago Police Department, Larry and his team brought in and successfully managed over $400,000,000 in grant funding and initiated the only police-led program in the country providing direct capacity-strengthening services to 501(c)3 programs (CPD’s A Force For Good supported over 100 Chicago-based, community-serving organizations). He has also worked at and with Illinois agencies helping people overcome barriers to employability and managing the federally funded Illinois Juvenile Block Grant program.
Larry also co-founded and was the first President of the Illinois Balanced & Restorative Justice Project 501(c)3, and in retirement he continues his commitment to public safety and justice reform by helping to develop a coalition of governmental and community-based organizations to advocate for prison reentry reform and resources.
