Trainings –
Hundreds in our community gained valuable skills from trainings offered by The Glades Initiative:
• Cooking Matters Nutrition Program -
We taught residents how to shop for and cook healthy meals on a budget, with over 120 participating, ranging from teens to seniors.
• Medical Interpreter Training -
20 bilingual residents received training in how to provide quality interpreter services to residents with language challenges.
• Financial Literacy Program -
The 15 sessions provided in Spanish and Haitian Creole taught fundamental banking concepts to over 80 residents, with topics covering credit, home ownership, budgeting, checking, and more.
Background Screening –
We provided more than 560 Level II (federal and state) background screens to organizations in the Glades. Administering local background screens saved organizations the cost of sending employees 80 miles round-trip for the same services.
Increased Refrigerated Storage Capacity –
Our newest addition to our Glades Area Food Bank gives us the opportunity to store fresh, perishable foods for our partner agencies, providing quality food to our families in need.
Emergency Response -
Recently, Hurricane Irma rocked our community. We kept our residents informed about evacuation orders and other emergency warnings as the storm approached. Afterwards, we let our families know where to find food and shelter, and assisted them with applications to FEMA and other critical services, a task made more difficult by the fact that many of our residents don’t have access to a computer.
Every day our work — and your support — touches the lives of our clients. As we head into the holiday season, you will be hearing more from us.
We ask that you remember The Glades Initiative in your annual giving and help continue the work that is so critical for our families in need.
Our best wishes to you and your family,
