YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Support The Glades Initiative.

Life isn’t easy for the clients we serve. Imagine this scenario: a family works hard to put food on the table, but the seasonal nature of their jobs doesn’t provide enough for them to get by. This is underemployment: when a family works so hard and still has very little. These are our clients. And these are your neighbors.

Your support is essential. Our community benefits from your contribution. At The Glades Initiative, we work hard to improve the lives of residents in our area. Your contribution to this work ensures that our clients, and most importantly their children, don't go to bed without something to eat, and can access the medical care they deserve.

We need you more than ever. We will work hard to continue making a difference in our community, and bettering the lives of the many residents we serve each and every day. Over the past year our work has had a profound and positive influence. Your support of The Glades Initiative allows us to serve our community.

Our Major Accomplishments This Year:

Community Resource Educators – Our navigators assisted more than 3,000 residents with applications for food and health benefits. Our food insecure families received $1.2 million in food benefits, and 1,856 residents received health coverage. In total, our clients received services valuing over $8 million.
Glades Community Updates – Our popular weekly eblast kept more than 2,300 subscribers informed about resources, programs, services, and events in the Glades.

Glades Area Food Bank – Our food bank served thousands of families through our 14 partner agencies, who distributed food throughout Belle Glade, South Bay and Pahokee.
Trainings – Hundreds in our community gained valuable skills from trainings offered by The Glades Initiative:

• Cooking Matters Nutrition Program - We taught residents how to shop for and cook  healthy meals on a budget, with over 120 participating, ranging from teens to seniors.
• Medical Interpreter Training - 20 bilingual residents received training in how to  provide quality interpreter services to residents with language challenges.
• Financial Literacy Program - The 15 sessions provided in Spanish and Haitian Creole  taught fundamental banking concepts to over 80 residents, with topics covering  credit, home ownership, budgeting, checking, and more.

Background Screening – We provided more than 560 Level II (federal and state) background screens to organizations in the Glades. Administering local background screens saved organizations the cost of sending employees 80 miles round-trip for the same services.

Increased Refrigerated Storage Capacity – Our newest addition to our Glades Area Food Bank gives us the opportunity to store fresh, perishable foods for our partner agencies, providing quality food to our families in need.

Emergency Response - Recently, Hurricane Irma rocked our community. We kept our residents informed about evacuation orders and other emergency warnings as the storm approached. Afterwards, we let our families know where to find food and shelter, and assisted them with applications to FEMA and other critical services, a task made more difficult by the fact that many of our residents don’t have access to a computer.

Every day our work — and your support — touches the lives of our clients. As we head into the holiday season, you will be hearing more from us. We ask that you remember The Glades Initiative in your annual giving and help continue the work that is so critical for our families in need.

Our best wishes to you and your family,
