CUNY Callouts

Opeyemi Julius, Queens College ’24, is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in applied math. She previously studied physics at City College and is currently an R&D engineering intern at Penn State, following previous internships with Mastercard, Bloomberg and others.

What challenges have you overcome?

The most challenging part about attending CUNY is the commute. I live in Brooklyn and it is very stressful to get to lecture classes [in Queens] on time. It can easily get difficult and draining, but I overcame this by carefully selecting classes at days and times that work for me.

What advice would you give someone to help them grow as a student?

Stop being so hard on yourself. It's a difficult period, but worth it in the end. The education given [at CUNY] is a great one. It builds character; it definitely built mine. And this goes for anything you do: You’ve got to stick it through. Keep moving. It is all worth it. I know what it's like being a first-generation immigrant daughter with no money to fall back on. No college funding. Just hopes and dreams every morning and commuting to school.
