Hi! I’m Allegra Schejtman, a graduate student at Unity Environmental University. I wanted to introduce myself to you as I’ve been the one bringing you the last four Sustainable Recreation Newsletter Series posts here in Ski NH’s newsletters. I am currently pursuing a master's degree in environmental science and sustainability, so I wanted to share why sustainability matters to me personally. Growing up in New England, skiing, hiking, and outdoor recreation has always been a huge part of my life. Seeing our winters become warmer and less snowy, helped push me into the environmental field so that I could learn more and help others to do the same.
That’s why I partnered with Ski NH to create this newsletter series for you all. Sustainability is critical to skiing because climate change is hurting the industry we love so much, causing shorter seasons, less natural snow, and increased reliance on energy-intensive snowmaking. The ski industry has shown some amazing adaptation and resilience in the past few years when it comes to more challenging winters, but individual actions matter too.
To end, here are some of the steps I’ve taken to be more sustainable on and off the slopes:
- Composting
- Carpooling when I go to the mountains
- Pack my lunch in reusable containers and reusable plastic bags
- Bringing my own mug for my coffee stop on the way to the mountain, and a small foldable water bottle for my pocket when I am on the slopes
- Picking up any trash I find (In case you haven’t noticed, a lot of people drop their litter from the lift)
I hope from my newsletters, I can inspire recreationists to start adopting their own sustainable practices so that we can all continue to enjoy the mountains we love!
