Three Questions for
Colleen Murphy, MD
-
If you had not become a physician, what would you be doing? I’d be a zoological veterinarian. I’ve always been fascinated by wildlife and conservation, and working with animals in natural or sanctuary settings feels like a dream parallel to medicine—just in the wild! It combines science, compassion, and a deep respect for the natural world, which is something I’ve always valued.
-
What magical fix to the house of medicine would make the most difference? How healthcare is paid for—especially the structure of health insurance. Too often, financial barriers get in the way of timely, necessary care. The complexity, lack of transparency, and misaligned incentives between payers and providers create frustration for patients and clinicians alike. I’d love to see a system that’s more equitable, straightforward, and focused on actual health outcomes rather than administrative hurdles.
-
What destination is next on your bucket list? The Galápagos Islands—before we’re no longer allowed to visit them! The biodiversity is incredible, and it feels like one of those rare places where nature still reigns. I'd love to experience the wildlife, the isolation, and the unique ecosystems firsthand while it's still possible to do so responsibly. It feels like both a personal adventure and a reminder of how urgent conservation efforts are.
Colleen Murphy, MD, FACS is a Breast Surgical Oncologist who is passionate about guiding patients through every step of their breast cancer journey. Known for her compassionate care and thoughtful communication, Dr. Murphy combines advanced surgical expertise with a deeply personal approach to medicine. She believes in empowering patients with knowledge and support, creating individualized treatment plans that reflect both the science and the person behind the diagnosis. She currently is the Medical Director of Breast Surgery at UCHealth Cherry Creek Medical Center.
Dr Murphy is also our newest DMS Board Member!
Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Murphy has made Colorado her home and is proud to be part of Denver’s vibrant medical community. Outside the operating room, she enjoys spending time outdoors, connecting with her family and friends, and staying active in initiatives that support women's health and cancer awareness.

THE DMS
MULTIMEDIA COLUMN
This month's review: We asked brand new graduate, Dakota Hitchcock, MD*, to share an influential book in her life: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho:
I have seen this book described as a “timeless guide for those seeking purpose and fulfillment”. The story follows a shepherd who sets off on a journey in search of treasure but ultimately discovers a deeper meaning in pursuing his dreams. A central theme is the pursuit of one’s purpose, or “Personal Legend” and it encourages readers to pursue their dreams with determination, reflect deeply, and persevere through challenges to discover the meaning of true success. As you read, you can’t help but reflect on your own journey and the moments when you had to trust the process, even without knowing exactly where it would lead.
I first read this book before starting medical school, and again after Match Day — and each time, it resonated in a different way. I find it is a story that can resonate deeply with medical students, residents, and attendings. It reminds us to stay connected to why we chose this path in the first place and invites us to embrace both the external demands of medicine and the internal journey of growth and self-discovery. Themes of purpose, intuition, faith, and resilience run throughout — qualities that are not just relevant but essential in the practice of medicine.
| * - Dakota Hitchcock, MD, was born and raised in Colorado, where she picked up a love for the outdoors through camping, hiking, and gardening. She recently graduated from the University of Colorado School of Medicine and will be starting her Internal Medicine Preliminary year at Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver this summer. Reading has become one of her favorite ways to decompress and take a mental break after busy days in the hospital. | | Read anything interesting or thought provoking recently? Seen a good movie?
